Default Dogs and Bait for Bear and Cougar

There is a bill being pushed that would overturn the ban using dogs and bait for bear and cougar (HB2436). We need to contact our representatives and show them our support for this. Heck, pending future budget cuts, it would save ODFW money by not having to hire hounds man to do the job.

For the record, I have never hunted by either of these means, but do recognize that this was another step to get personal with me. If anything this would keep the antis busy with something they already dealt with and not come after my gun, bow, or lead weights

I agree 100%. I still can't believe this happened to Oregon. Extremist groups make me stomp my feet.

I talked to an ODFW employee a few weeks ago regarding this issue, and he said we may get bait hunting back, but don't look for hound hunting anytime soon. The reason, people were tired of seeing dogs chase bear and cougar through thier property. I'm not sure how true this is, but that is what I was told. If it does happen it will help with the bear popualtion, but I still think we'll see the cat population increase. He also said that his bear complaints have exploded since the ban. The same people that fought to get the ban in place are now griping about bears in thier garbage, bird feeders and harassing thier pets. Go figure?

10 years ago, it was uncommon for me to see a bruin, now I see one in dang near every clearcut I come to. Blacktail numbers are way down and people are crying about that, but they don't realize what they did for aftereffects when they voted for that ban. Sometimes it's irony what they ask for and get are two different things.

That being said I'm all for reinstating it.

Unfortunately, the people who voted for the ban (twice) live inside the Portland, Salem & Eugene UGBs and they haven't seen any more bears or cougars now than before the ban took effect (zero). Most don't hear about or don't care about rural concerns. Its gonna take a gortex-clad granola-crunchin' yuppie hiker being killed and eaten  before urbanites will understand the problem.

What is really sad is that there were a lot of sportsmen that voted for the ban. They say they don't agree with using dogs & bait then go home, feed their shorthair and cure their eggs.

GRB - Yeah, after the COUGAR kills it, take one gore-tex wearin' granola-crunchin' hipster and skewer on a fresh-cut alder pole 4" in diameter. Roast slowly, turning frequently over big bed of hardwood coals, basting frequently with drippings collected in roasting pan. After 12 hours, throw away crispy critter, eat alder pole.

Sounds do-able. But, if it's anything link Shish-ka-bob's, I have problems with those.

I just can't get the last piece of meat off without gagging.

raise taxes, Raise fees, Money Money Money, I for one do not agree to raiseing fees I believe in manageing the $$ they now have and yes doing some belt tightening like the rest of the nation during these hard times. Hold them accountable for how they spend our $$ now and yes possibly make some cut backs. Maybe some of you have bottom less pockets of cash but most of us don't. Hunting should not be a rich mans sport. I for one spend well in access of 3 to 4 thousand a year on hunting and fishing possible more if you figure everything in. I just don't see the need for more of my dollars to be wasted. they need to look hard at what needs to be funded and what is waste and make do. Find out where the edge is and the go from that. It is what every other organization is doing in the state both private and government.

Go ahead fire away I went a put a big circle on my chest so go for it.

I'll Even start it off. Capin' what an idiot you are not to support your hunting and fishing priviliges, Yes priviliges they are not rights and can and will be taken away if we all think like you do. You will be one of the reasons why we all loose our resource. Well how am I doing so far?

Fact is I probably throw 7 to 8 % of my income towards fishing, Hunting, Food, Hotels, Boats tackle, Equipment, guides ect...
So I already do my fair share and then some.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Don't eat 'em! I heard they are really bitter and every encounter leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Since they are a non-native species you can't throw them back either. Just make sure you dispose of them properly. You don't want it to spread.

I'm all for cutting a few ODFW jobs to support our hatcheries?? I know a lot of them and probably only 50% are worth what they're paid. I'm pretty tired of paying more money to support bad government to be able to go fishing. I agree with C.Dan with most things, one of which I'm paying a lot of money to do it already. 5 bucks won't break the bank, but if they do it once, everytime they have a crunch they'll do it again, and again, and again. Then it will be a rich man's sport real quick.

I'm also all for dogs and bait to control our situation, but they'll probably make a license for that too if it passes.
