Default Offer to repay kindness. Idaho hunting info.

I have not posted on this page before , but have been getting tons of great info from the salty dogs and the main ifish. I have made this offer to them but it seems to fall on deaf ears. These guys mostly fish.
I have hunted all over this state and i know much about hunting of all kinds, birds (chucker, sage hen ,goose , turkey ect....) I have taken a dozen Elk (bulls) and an untold # of deer all bucks, mule and whitetail. If any of you need info about Idaho i may be able to help, I have never used a guide so i know absolutly nothing about them, but I know alot about areas and do it your selfers i might be able to help.... id. p.

Thanks for the offer. I don't plan on heading that way to hunt this fall but I think a few of the guy's are trying to get tags over there. If BOE draws anothe rtag for ID. you can keep him when he gets there. He make a good pack mule.

My wife told me she always wanted a mule just before we got married. It just occured to me she may have been insinuating I was gonna be her mule to carry the load. And I thought she wanted 20 acres on a lake with a log cabin and hunting animals

ID. great offer, I would like to know "exactly" where a 400 class bull will be on Oct 30th. I really like dark horns so work that in if you are deciding on a couple bulls.

Very kind offer.

I posted a strand about out of state tags yesterday. I have not submitted my applications for Idaho yet since they are not due.

I intend to apply for a moose tag. I've got a friend who recently moved to Lewiston that has been in on 3 good bulls taken in the Selway, all with rifles. All bulls were 44-48" class.

I've got another buddy who lives in Haley and says the Soda Springs area over on your side of the state has good numbers and good bulls.

I'd like to take one with my bow. I usually hunt public land. Have stock and like back country huntin.

The area in the Selway is pretty thick brush and my friend thinks I'll have trouble with a bow. It is also 100% pack in program.

Any recomondations on units and areas for application would be very much appreciated.

I'd be happy to re-pay with some fishin trips over this way. Maybe the Snake River next October?

Thx

The Selway is very brushy, steep and remote. There are some good herds there but getting a shot can be tough. I lived and worked in N. Idaho and went to school in Moscow.
I took a 345 bull near Boville Id. The southern hunts are much more open country. But with less cover, the pressure gets to the animals more. they just cant hide as well. Soda Springs has an exploding elk population. The deer herds are having a very tough time comming back from some very tough winters. Last year killed 90% of our fawns. I have never killed an Elk with a bow but many of my friends do. i think from what i know (with a bow ) I would think about unit 50 or 38 (i dont have the regs. in front of me) If crowds turn you off , i think i would try and hunt away from the Soda area. Lots of Utah. The unit near Leadore( North east)i think its 38 or 36 . has been growing lots of elk and several friends hunt it every year and have killed some pretty good bulls. Not too much pressure. Ill keep in touch and be glad to help , if i can. Actually the list of units i would consider.. 50,59,58,36,38 and ill have to look at a list of units to remember them all. Northern Idaho almost any unit will have lots of Elk. If you are interested in packing in there are many good units .North and south. Much to think about. Im a school teacher and im in class with a bunch of 8th graders. Pardon my writting. I dont spent the time to edit and i can have trouble keeping a single thought going for more than about 1 minute Ill get back. id. p.

I was actually researching a lot of area over by you here recently for hunting elk. The targahee and the areas in the Tetons. I have even talked to some wildlife bios in the area and might give it a go this year if the weather doesn't pan out in Oregon. Is that area pressured heavily?? We targeted a specific area that was a walkin show only to try and limit the people. Drop me an email sometime, I'd like to hear some opinions on the area. I'd gladly take you fishing over here the next time you venture west in return. chow.

Island park , ihave walked litterly almost every inch of island park. I started summer work up there as a 17 year old . It is very flat and all lodgepoll pine. I would not hunt it for Elk.There is a unit near Ashton Id , that produces many big bulls , but also gets lots of pressure. Ill keep talking to you all and have more time tomorrow.

I was actually steered away from island park due to the Griz problems around there. I forget the place he told me over the phone right now but will check my notes tonight at home and get back to you.

GRB

When I was growing up in Lewiston I knew several people who took moose with a bow. All of them got them way up north. Look north of Sandpoint, all of the way to the Canadian border.

If you look at the unit map try to stay with a unit lower than 8.

Good luck

Id Painter,

First of all I must say that is awesome of you to offer your info!

I've been looking into Idaho for Mule Deer. They have some terrific late draw hunts but you have to buy a tag and license to be eligible to apply. If I don't draw a tag I wouldn't know where to even start. Any info on decent deer areas? Not looking for a monster, although that wouldn't hurt my feelings. Just want to opportunity to shoot a nice buck.

I.D. WOW! What a great offer, I will take you up on it. I have read many of your posts on the fishing and salty dogs boards those guys have been great with helping you and in part me and I'm sure many others. Thanks everybody for that help!

I would love to do an out of state hunt. My hunting partner and I backpack hunt. We archery hunt Elk and rifle hunt deer, antelope, etc.

What I would like info on is a place to look at for mule deer or a spot for whitetail. The info that I would need would be a unit that has animals, draw chances, unit names, map names.

What I'm not looking for is specific hunt spots or techniques.

I've tried finding info out before but found it difficult. My buddy and I just want a starting spot for an out of state hunt.

I hope this is not asking too much. If it is let me know what you can. Thanks K16 e-mail me at luke2@attbi.com

Curlew.. Big Mule bucks are what this part of the state is known for. I would try and get a tag in unit 59 or 69. The late hunts can be very cold and snowy. Sometimes you pretty much need a snow mobile. But if the big snows dont come early you can hunt from your truck very well. The biggest bucks come from the units East and south of Idaho falls. Several of the biggest bucks ive ever seen were shot by friends on the late 69 hunt. I mean these bucks were unreal. One came from Caribou Mt in unit 69 and was ranked in the top 10 or 20 of all time (?). I saw one a couple years ago, that had 7 inch bases. My father killed one in that unit that had 31" spread..... If you want a big mule buck Unit 69 or the unit around Magic Res(,unit?) Those would be my top two to pick from. id. p.

Curlew.... Get your tag for unit 59. I know exactly where the herd winters . There is a section of the pioneer range ,,, about 4 major canyons. If you get a tag ill tell where to go. The friends who have hunted it on the late hunt say that the deer get so thick you cant help bet get a good- un. The bucks dont have the super spread, but they tend to be very heavy beamed, and long points. I took a my first buck in that unit. Later my father killed a monster there, it scored 185 with a major broken tine and a 18 inch spread. One of our top 10 bucks . id. p.

Wow, your everybodys dream, a scouting machine.

I also have been following lots of posts and think you really started something as you can see.

Your last post really has me working on planning a trip. Would love to get a respecfull mount, does not have to be record breaker, for the den.

Thanks for all the good info.

I fish about 200 days a year (retired you see) and will be out fishing for Salmon/Halibut at Neah Bay in NW Washington several times this summer if you'd like to go out. I usually stay for 3 one week trips a summer. You will take home all the fish you can haul. It's also a great time.

I'm just getting into tuna this summer, so can't help you out there.

Thanks for the info. Any ideas of where to start if I don't draw a late tag? I wouldn't know where to start if I didn't get drawn.

Curlew, If you dot have a late tag , you will have the best chance at a good buck in the southern units. I hunt unit 50 but i know exactly where the bucks live and have been killing them in this spot for many years, my father started hunting it in 1963. It a secret. The units around Soda Springs and east of Idaho falls have the biggest bucks , but it can be tough to get them, before the big snows and the rut. I have hunted an area called Franklin Basin, near willow flat camp ground. Its very near Preston Id. In years past it has produced big bucks and lots of deer. The last i herd was that the winters had killed so many deer in that area that it was tough to get a buck. Unit 50 has been very tough , to get a good 4ptr the last three years. Magic Res. has good herds and big bucks but i dont think they are letting a general hunt in those units(?). My thoughts would be to look at any of these areas they all produce good bucks . Black foot Res. is a good area also. I hope this helps ... Send me an email and ill give you my phone # and we can talk some time.. id. p.
