New guns this year
Does anybody have their eyes on a new weapon this year. The wife says I have enough already (is that possible ?). Although I did get a new bow a couple weeks ago. Yes Bruce, it's a Hoyt.

I didnt think there was such a thing as enough guns  . I might buy another .280 in Stainless with a synthetic stock. But that is a big maybe right now.

Hey Gary,
Don't be embarrassed for buying a Hoyt. There is no shame in shooting the second best bow available.
Having the very best available is just not for everybody.

Re: New guns this year
I've got a hankering for a couple of .17 HMR's for this spring's rat season. I have to buy two because my wife won't let me go without her.
I don't want to put out the bucks for an Anschutz, so I'll probably go for the Marlin. I've shot the Anschutz though and, man, are they sweet. It's a hot little round with virtually no recoil.
Team that up with a Leupold 6X18 and it should be tooooo much fun.

Re: New guns this year
Always in the market for a pre 64' model 70..
I like original and to have a stock that has not been refinished by an "expert".
If I find a good value, I am interested.
Speaking of guns, I bought a Benelli Nova at Gi JOes for $239 or $269, I can't remember. Anyway, WOW what a deal. If anybody can find a 3.5 inch shotgun for that cost, let me know... What a great gun. I think it lists fro $475, but I am not sure

Re: New guns this year
Im thinking about it. I guys offered me a fair price for my 300 winnie, and that would give me a reason to buy something new, thinking 338 win or 35 whelen. May be a little redundant, but i really NEED a new elk rifle- i havent had a new gun in at least three years!

Re: New guns this year
New T/C barrels. A super 14 inch 30-30 barrel. A Super 14 inch 223 barrel and a redfield 2-6 pistol scope. A super 10 to 14 inch 410/45 long colt.
A new Marlin laminated wood stock stainless steel 17 HMR with a new sniper scope, and tripods.
You guys talked me out of the all weather model 300 win mag. So a new Ruger M77 laminated wood stock stainless steel 300 win mag with a new Leupold scope.
Still have not figured out what new auto 12 GA that I wanna get though.

Wife and 3,
You'd love my elk rifle. Grandpa left me a 1938 300 HandH Mdl 70, 25 3/8th" barrel. Serial number is within an arm's reach of 10,000

Kruechief,
I've got a 300 H&H on a Sako that my dad got me when I was 14. Forty-three years later I've still got it and took my elk with it this year.
Your post brings back old and new memories.

Maybe if I keep buying those tickets on Wednesday and Saturday, I will get lucky and can buy one of these
Nesika Bay Rifles
I have shot Benchrest with Glen Harrison for years. I have one of his classic benchrest actions on one of my bench guns. He is putting out some of the finest rifles I have ever seen. He brought a few down last year to a match to show us. All I can say is "SWEET!"

Re: New guns this year
Cool Skein,
My grandfather was Carl Powell. He was a prospector up Quartzville and the believe it or not he owned the land that the Jamboree is held on in Sweet Home. It was a .9 acre plot that was an orchard. The city begged, borrowed and finally stole it from him. By then he had lost 500 acres out by Lacomb during the depression, his claim was under Green peter res. and then the .9 in the middle of Sweet Home. One day on my home from school numerous police cars were passing my bus in a big hurry. As I got closer to our property in Lacomb (my grandpa's place) I noticed they were all in front of the house.
It seems that the power company had failed to negotiate "fairly" with Grandpa for a 20' x 20' chunk of land to put the high power lines on. Old Grandpa had enough and had Winifred (mod 70) and a DA .38 and was proceeding to give hell to the helicopter that wanted to drop off the parts to the tower.
Well it ended up with grandpa being paid about 4x what all the others were paid for their plots.
The kick pad on Winnie says "Lew's Sporting Goods" Foster Oregon. Grandpa bought it there in 1938 right before his first trip to Alaska. I guess that the 300 HandH had won some sort of 1000-yard shoot and grandpa figured that Grizzly bears were better shot at that distance!

Re: New guns this year
Krue,
That's a great story. Alaska is where I grew up, so a 300 H&H made a lot of sense up there. My dad carried a Mod 70 in the same caliber which is why he bought me one - we could use the same ammo. I can't tell you how much meat I've put on the table with that gun.
It's a pretty small world out there, but when you mentioned Powell's and Sweet Home, I almost fell out of my chair. The house I'm living in used to belong to Otto (I think) and Ruth Powell. Any relation?

My friend and his father have convinced me to take up elk hunting(or hunting in general) this year, so yes I will be looking for a rifle.
I think I've decided on 30.06 everything after that is still up in the air.
The sportsman show is gonna be exciting!

I have a pre 64mod 70 300 H&H rechambered to 300 Weatherby. Only problem is the wood. Some person thought it would add value by refinishing it--boy was he wrong. The gun is now only worht about $500 when it should be worth a little more. :depressed:

SeanD- skip the .338 and opt for the a new .300 WSM. You'll love it!
Wife- Was that a camo'd Nova? 28" barrel? Do they have any left? Some kind of sale? That's a good price.

Re: New guns this year
Naw, I sold the 7 rem mag and I'm selling the 300 win mag because I already have a 30.06 that i cant bear to part with, and all three are pretty much in the same class.
A 300wsm wouldnt suit me cuz im keepin the 06, and besides, im one of those anti short-mag guys  I dont think a larger than 30 caliber is necessary for elk, but I still need one. Probably mostly because i dont have one.

Re: New guns this year
Chukrchaser,
Yeah, the CZ is a nice gun, but the Marlin is made in the USA, and it, too, is a nice gun. Where it's made is my deciding factor. If you read my posts you'll find that I'm pretty adament about supporting my fellow working-man. I've got a real personal commitment to getting Americans back to work, so for my part I will look for and buy items made in the USA. Sometimes that isn't easy - because so many companies have shipped those jobs overseas. Grrrrr.
My litany goes something like this:
Made in China? Or made in the USA? Look before you buy. Defend America with your dollars.
SeanD, I still have those magazines boxed up. We gotta get together.
Not trying to turn this thread into a political debate. CZ's and Anschutz are both nice guns, but because I'm buying new, I want something made a little closer to home. Trust me, if I had an Anschutz I wouldn't be selling it.

SeanD,
WooooHooo! Them grizzle b'ars better look out now!
I've got a couple of friends that shoot .35's and they have lots of respect for what they'll do. You're definitely gonna have to join ARPC now.
It's still to dark to shoot when I get off work, but if you would like to meet out there (after 5) I can show you around. That'll give me a chance to get those magazines to you, too. Just say the word.
Congrats on your new rifle.

Re: New guns this year
Skein, yeah i know it. Id really like to shoot more this year. Last year i shot very little, and i miss it, i shot A LOT the year before, and really started to improve my offhand shooting, kind of afraid it reverted back with such little practice lately. I used to have a farm field i could use to shoot to 300 yards, but the farmer sold it, so i need a new place to shoot, and ARPC sounds like the ticket.
Give me a call about meeting you out there, I like to check the place out anyway, and get signed up. 760-1703

Re: New guns this year
You like those .17's huh Skein? I've come to the conclusion through my own research that those things really aren't much better than a .22 Mag. I wanted one at first but I think I'm leaning toward a .220 Swift or a maybe a .222 or .223.... I'm having a heck of a time deciding but I DO want to pick up a new varminter this year and I don't want the run of the mill 22-250 - looking for something a little more on the rare side.
I think one of the things that turned me off the most on that .17 was it being a rim fire, I love to reload to much, especially tuning on varmint loads to reach out and kiss those sun bathing rats...

How bout a .223 ackley? That would give you something different, and would give velocities very close to the 22-250... and it sounds really cool!

Re: New guns this year
Skein,
Before you buy a .17 do a comparision w/ a 223. Ammo costs the same (well pretty close) about 18 19 cents a round for 17, where as you can get match grade (Black Hills) for 26 cents a round. + more velocity and more knock down. A real plus for song dogs etc. Remington makes some sweet models in the USA for a pretty darn good price as well.

.300H&H is the best feeding .300 on the market. I want to neck down one to .250! It should fly. I have a goal of building three guns all the same .250 H&H wildcat, .300 H&H, .375H&H.
I do have a model 70 built in '63 in .300win. that I would part with if the right deal came across. I'm looking for a pre '64 .375.

Re: New guns this year
a .250 on an H&H should feed better than a improved 25/06 and yes Distilled it will burn up a barrel. I figure just a little over a 1000 rounds it should start to show some wear, I don't think I will ever get to 1000 on this gun so it should be ok. If not than I get to put on a new barrel, or rechamber it for something else!
I'll let you guys know how it shoots, planning on having them done by the first of the year. I waiting on the actions now.

As the river was rising from all the rain yesterday, I sat down and ordered a new Lyman Great Plains hunter in .54 cal.
My Thompson Hawken is still shooting where it looks after 20 years, it's just that sometimes you just needed another one.
Jerimiah Johnson wandered them hills with one in each hand, wonder if the ODF will mind if I do?

I got lucky. Found a great deal on the one over and under that fits me great. Beretta Silver Pigeon II. It's my new baby. Can't wait to get out and shoot some roosters over my dog with it. Maybe next month on one of the game preserves......

p.s. Really would like to get that black powder plains rifle. Seems like that would be a good smokepole to start me on my way to an old school hunt.
