Hunting column on target
January 28, 2003
This is in response to Henry Miller’s column about Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife postponing the “family rabbit hunt” because of public protests (Jan. 9).
For once, I agree with Mr. Miller. This is a case of “marginalization,” which he defines as “pushing a group of people to the edge of mainstream acceptance.”
The conflict is between a group of people who believe that animals exist for the use and amusement of humans and find it fun to kill wildlife, as opposed to a group of people who have respect and compassion for animals and find it unacceptable to hunt wildlife in what little territory they have left.
I am proud to be in the group with compassion for animals and who will protest against women and teenagers who want to use packs of dogs to run down rabbits and kill them in a wildlife refuge.
Fortunately, licensed hunters represent only a small percentage of Oregonians. According to national statistics, the number of people who hunt is dwindling every year, making hunters a fringe group.
Hunting is no longer a part of mainstream acceptance and is going the way of “previous norms” that Mr. Miller says are examples of marginalization: “bigotry, drunken driving and smoking.”
