Default duck hunting 1-22-03

Ducks were in! Is what I heard last night so we shut down our crabbing / sturgeon trip to Tillamook in lue of a duck hunt on private property in the Tualatin river watershed. We set out the decoys at 0-dark thirty and my dog Woody was giving me the look. You know the you had better shoot me some birds today look And boy did they show up! About 10 min before shooting time we had 3 or 4 flocks circling our spred I just knew it would be a great day. But when you can't hit the broad side of a barn you tend to give the ducks the upper hand. Several people have told me to stick with fishing but I owe it to my dog to get him out at least once or twice a year. A box of shells later we had 3 fat drakes in the bag and should have had many more. Woody sure had some fun chasing down those ducks I have to say that I had a great time today and it was nice to get the dog out and do some duck hunting for a change. Passed on lots of pintails but had plenty of chances on teal, widgeon and mallards. Looks like I will be eating duck tonight!

The pintails were to thick to shoot at anything else today. I had 100's and 100's of Pintails bombing in one after another ... every now and then there'd be a mallard or teal stick their head through the cloud of pinnies.... I couldn't decide if i was frustrated or lucky ... it was fun to sit and watch them land 15 feet from me, then again it would have been nice to been able to shoot.

On Sauvie S. Island private propert it was soooooo slow. No opening shooting hour shots descernable anywhere. First ducks were Pintails at 8:30 then another group at 9:30. That's it. Now that goose is closed we had about every goose we could see in any direction land in the Fescue fields. For miles they came. There were a few thousand by the time we left. Even the new cook at The Decoy in Linnton could not get things right!

Excellent day for all you all. I am have been hunting in the Corvallis area for 5 seasons now and havent been able to find a decent decoy shoot since we froze real hard in the winter of 98. Do you guys know of any decent decoy shoots with in my area open to the public. I have hunted Siltcoos lake(okay), Davis(lake would have been better if it wasnt for the yucks that set up right at shooting time and started hail calling mallard at 80 yds), and have hunted here and there in and around corvallis. Just looking for some hints or areas to check out. Thanks for the pics Fishhog!

Nice Pics ! You have obviously had better luck then I have this year. My duck numbers are way down. Gonna give it a go this weekend! Hope to smack a few before the closure.
