Rogue Wild and Scenic, Help?
I am rafting down the Rogue Wild and Scenic section this weekend. I would be very greatful for any information regarding what is fishable in the river right now. Summer streelhead, trout? I am pretty sure the springer run is over.
Thanks, Craft "O" Smoke

Re: Rogue Wild and Scenic, Help?
There are a few late springers still getting caught in the Agness area, so there should be some going through. The summer steelhead are just starting to get into the upper river so there should be good numbers going through as long as its not going to be a lousy year for them too.

Re: Rogue Wild and Scenic, Help?
Just returned from the wild section last week. I hate to rain on your parade, but the fact of the matter is, there are no fish. I saw two springers roll below Rainey Falls, nothing after that, not even a dead one. For the entire four days I saw 4 half pounders roll.
I did get in some good birding however.
My next trip will be Sept. 20, perhaps fishing will pick up.

Re: Rogue Wild and Scenic, Help?
Thanks for the info guys. Is there any trout or small mouth bass to be had? When you say you got some good birding in what are you refering to? Is there grouse down there??

Bird watching, not bird slushing. Read the do's and dont's really carefuly. Discharging any firearm within a quarter mile of the river is prohibited.
The upper river is patroled by armed BLM deputies, the lower section has armed Forest Service marshalls on patrol.
They are mainly looking for fire restriction violations, portable toilets and litter issues.
Oh ya, if you have never done this section before, scout any class 4 rapids, if possible. Some, like Mule Creek canyon, are just dive right in sheer terror. Wear a PFD on this section of the river!
You can buy a good river how to book at Fisherman's Marine.

Wear a PFD on the whole canyon down to Agness from Galice...Or from the hatchery for that matter. Things can get strange, different, or just plain dangerous at any time due to the flow adjustments from the dams! Been there, done that! Sometimes it's weird how different is has been. I'm still alive because of being "concern'd"

Thanks guys. I have been down the stretch before and plan on wearing a PFD the entire way. Any other fishing advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rogue Wild and Scenic, Help?
Fishing will be slow. You might pick up a summer run Steelhead. Enjoy the trip, whitewater, sunshine, and relaxation. You're about 6 weeks early for good fishing. There are no Smallmouth (I hope ) in the Rogue. No trout to speak of. Most of the available habitat is used up by Salmon and Steelhead smolts and pre-smolts. Summer water temperatures can get pretty high in the Rogue canyon this time of year which is not good for any salmonids. Drink plenty of fluids during the day (not alcohol). I made one trip a few years ago and I failed to do that. Ended up just short of heat exhaustion. Had to sit in Mule Creek and suck down the Gator Aid for about an hour before I started to recover.

I too came off the river last weekend. Saw a few half pounders rise. No one I met that had been fishing had any luck.
