Okay guys, I'm just stoarting out my salmon arsenal. Most of m fishing is going to be trolling, but I will also be doing a little drift fishing. How would YOU GUYS fill my tackle box?
Thanks,

Re: Help Me!!
At delta park there is a place called Fishermans marine. Go through the doors all the way to the back counter and hang a left. Now start shoveling.

Re: Help Me!!
Give them your credit card and ask the educated and well meaning experts at the counter to help you fill your shopping cart. You cant go wrong there. FMS Delta Park is where I drop a bundle every month or so. The counter people at the fish counter are experts and will be much help.

Re: Help Me!!
Yeah, Fishermens Marine.
I don't think they let you work there unless you own at least four boats.

Re: Help Me!!
Hi hrbassin...
Where do you intend to do your trolling for Salmon? If it is in the Hood River area, I'd find out from some local good fisherman what they use.
Then I'd keep it simple by purchasing just the good basic stuff. For example, whether it is Spinners, Kwikfish, or whatever, I'd find out the two or three most popular/effective colors, and then have one or two of each. I would not buy every color available, and hope to find one that works.
FYI - Much of the gear used today is basically the same stuff that has been around for many decades, like spinners, wobblers, dodgers, plugs.
Here are some of the basic stuff I use fishing the Coast and some Willametter Valley streams:
Spinners: (Lime Green with dark green dot; Green tip Rainbow; and Red/white)
Troll Herring: I tie my own "Mooching rigs", that is a two hook set-up for either whole, or Cut-plug Herring.
Kwikfish: Some Trolling, or Backbouncing, is doen with Kwikfish or Flatfish. Generally the mid-size (in Kwikfish, size 14, 13, or maybe 15) troll better than the bigger K-16's, but some of that depends on the water speed, and your trolling speed.
Wobblers are used successfully by many fishermen, but I do not have any significant experience to share.
Basic staples for your tackle box are: hook sharpner/file, pliers, spare hooks, 3-way swivels or sliders, a few snap swivels, barrel swivels, an assortment of lead weights (I use round, in weights ranging from 1 oz to 4 oz, with a few heavier weights just in case). You'll want some leader material (I buy a spool of line to use for leader, rather than the more more expensive-per-foot leader-wheels). A small can of WD40 is handy, especially if you are in salt-water. And you'll need an ink pen to record all the Salmon you are going to catch.
For information and fish catching supplies, do not overlook the Luhr Jensen outlet store in Hood River. The LJ brochures are an excellent source of information.

Re: Help Me!!
Good reply, KChookem! As for you "open your wallet" folks, I could tell a little story about a salesperson at FMS Delta Park from way back when but I won't. Suffice it to say, I haven't fished that lure yet but I'm looking forward to doing so now that I have the right boat for the water to put it in. Don't get me wrong, those guys are great but it can be cheaper if you have some idea of what you want when you walk in the door.
A great place to start your search for new gear is the Ifish archives. There's a ton of great info from years gone by. Here's my post on the LIG board on how to search the archives. After the latest upgrades to Ifish, even I have some difficulties using the search feature but if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded.
A few tips I'll share with you up front:
- at some point, you'll probably want to start building your own spinners. Why not start now? It's cheaper to buy components and build your own and you can customize them to suit the fishing conditions. BOE's interchangeable clevis will add endless possibilities to your spinner arsenal.
- wobblers (Alvins, Simons and the like) are easily customized in seconds using prism tape. Buy a couple of standards (chrome, brass, what have you) and customize away.
- conventional wisdom on Kwikfish goes something like this: any color will catch fish as long as it's chartreuse. Start with some basics and add to your arsenal as your budget and experience dictate.
Good luck out there and have fun!

Re: Help Me!!
Whoops , shut my mouth. I was thinkin alotta wiggle warts. Thats all I'd ever used before with others, except for my guide friend. But thats his secret. Anyway, Sounds like I need a whole lotta wiggle warts. I think I remember using mostly fire tiger while I was out. It's been a few years. Has anyone else had any succes with another pattern/color?
And what is a prawn spinner? Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm a curious person.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Help Me!!
hey. I will tell you the best wart for mouth of wind in the fall. When the late silvers are there and chinook oct-nov use a standard brads wiggler not mag in that crome pink with purple herring bone. Thats been the hot color the last few yrs. Also the micheal jackson right at daylight. now At drano you want to plunk coonstripe shrimp under a bobber about 6 in off bott. Start doing that as soon as columbia hits 70degs. Do that all summer and into fall you will fill up the boat. Let me know if you need anything maybe I can make it upo a day if I can ever get a day off or my boat fixed. As for spinners I make my own that work well and dont over look blue fox vibrex in #4&#5 red body w/gold blade or all red those damb things work well

Re: Help Me!!
for starters......fire tigers, hot tigers, drano lake red( the guy at the store will know...) pink, michael jackson`s, plain and with a green butt and with a red butt, blue pirates and "brads" warts in color # bw- 28, all in both sizes. making your own spinners will come in handy to fish "the bench" (bank fishery) across from hood river in the fall for nook and coho small spin and glows (size 4-6, red head and siver body) for plunking the canyon on the klickitat in the fall also. ammermens eggs for those spin and glows.....
prawn spinner is configured so that you can put a prawn on it, the guy at the store can show these...(eric`s prawn spinner)

Re: Help Me!!
You can go out on a guided trip, see what the guide is using to catch fish and buy the same stuff. It will save you thousands of $$$$$$ and you wont have to put that addition on your home to store all the gear that don't catch fish.

Re: Help Me!!
Lucky me, I have a Guide friend that fishes all the same rivers as me. I haven't seen him for a while nut he just called 20 minutes ago asking if I wanted to hit drano tommorrow. Unfortunately, my dad is coming home tommorrow morning, and I haven't seen him for a while, but I'll get another chance.....

I am quite confident that any Trolling fisherman would be better off with a few Konezone's. Check out www.konezone.com and see some of the different methods you may want to employ. Good Luck and don't forget the Lifejackets!
