Man Dies Trying To Save Dog
Baseball Coach Plunges Into Icy Western Slope Lake
POSTED: 10:01 a.m. MST January 3, 2003
A Glenwood Springs, Colo., baseball coach, first reported to have drowned while putting out duck decoys, actually drowning while trying to save his dog, officials confirmed Friday.
Jeffrey Zerbato was goose hunting with his son and Carbondale resident Richard Beiser at Sweitzer Lake in Delta County on New Year's Day.
Investigators said the group was setting out duck decoys when their dog fell though the thin ice into the 70-acre lake a mile south of Delta, Colo.
The three went to the dog's aid and plunged through the ice into the water, officials said.
Lake manager Steve Werner said the lake is about two-thirds covered with ice. "But it's pretty soft. It's not safe," said Werner.
Beiser and Zerbato's son were able to get out of the lake on their own. Zerboto was pulled from the lake by rescue workers after about 30 minutes. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The dog the trio was trying to save also managed to get out of the water on his own.
"There were warning signs up regarding unsafe ice," said Shannon Tortorella, spokeswoman for Colorado State Parks, which operates the lake.
Zerbato coached a youth baseball all-star team, and a Triple Crown baseball program in Glenwood Springs.
