I slipped away this afternoon for a few hours of steelhead fishing. I was swinging wet flies using a sink tip, and a Green Butt Skunk. Nothing seemed to be happening, but I was going to at least put in my time on the river.
After daydreaming for a little while in-between casts I noticed on the surface film were what looked like caddisflies(?) or something. They were just sitting on the water drifting by, I don't know what they would be doing, laying eggs? Or just drinking? But in the 10 minutes I was watching, I think 100 or so of these insects drifted by. Anyway, I thought the fish might take to a dry fly with all these insects sitting on the water.
After removing the sink tip, looping in a regular leader, and tying on a dry I went from being almost board to truly enjoying fly-fishing. Still no steelhead, but I have to say I'd rather not catch a steelhead with a dry fly, then not catch a steelhead on a wet.
