Default Beach/Jetty fishing - rockfish?

I'm looking for somewhere along the coast I could possibly fish for rockfish (lingcod or rockcod in peticular). I'll be working my way out from Waldport. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to fish, and what to fish with?

When we fish around Astoria, we go otop of the sunken(south) Jetty. We use whatever bait we have left over, and use railroad spikes (for weight) tied on with rubber bands, only because they are cheap and tend to loose alot of gear.
Good luck, it is alot of fun!

Hey Eugenefisher,
Head up to Newport, and fish off the jetties in Yaquina bay. Or stay closer to home and find rocky areas, like around Seal Rock. By rockcod I'm assuming you mean rockfish. Rockfish, surfperch, and greenling will munch sandshrimp. Since you're near Waldport, go pump some from the bay before you go. Fresh bait rules, and there are hordes of sandshrimp in Alsea bay. For lingcod, I've heard the hot ticket is the twin-tailed plastic jigs, in black or white, on a four ounce head, cast and retrieved. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but that's what I've heard has been working for a few people I know.
Good luck, and I might see ya around sometime, I'll be out trying to get a lingcod this summer.

A word of caution when fishing off of the Jetty. The rocks can be slippery. Be extra carefull. You can slip into the water very fast. Good Luck.

Okie has this right. I wore a life jacket when I was nimble enough to fish off the jetty. I never needed it but I did get suprised by a larger than normal wave a couple times and if I had been down by the water I would have got more than my legs wet.

Be careful
Have fun and it is fun.

I fished off the jetty in Newport last year and hooked into a ling cod. I was using a whole herring and kept it close to the rocks since most of the fish hang out there. Fun times!

Thanks guys! I've fished Neptune quite a bit for Surfperch, with only 1 successful trip. I'll try Newport soon w/ some fresh sandshrimp.

Dont forget about live nightcrawlers as well, those darn Seabass and Coppers go nuts for em in the bay. Or at least its worked for me when I have fished inside around the jetty's.

I like to use small jig heads and put them on just like you would plastic baits, I have been told Lings like bigger stuff like hearing. I went out and fished around Seal Rock this past weekend and caught my only Ling(though undersized)on a very large jig and green plastic worm.

Good luck!

Hi Eugene
My uncle and I went to Newport yesterday, and we got a total of 40 red-tail surf perchs off the North jetty with fresh sand shrimps, we used number 2 hook with 3 ounce sinker on crappie rig, look out for sneaky waves
Good luck
