IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Fellow Gooseaholics,
Talked with Dave Smith about setting up an IFISH Hunt in the permit zone. Dave and Brad have agreed to give us a break on price if we can put together at least 10 guys. Price would be $140 per person and obviously you need your permit. I thought this would be a great chance for us to learn first hand from the "gurus of goose" ! Anyone interested ? Post up so I can get an idea of who would like to be involved. We can do dinner etc. Great way to meet other guys on the board and support each other in our addiction after a day of major carnage.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
I think that it would be a great idea but I have yet to take my coarse for goose and The hunt would most likely be in Oregon, right? Well, maybe have a duck/goose day over here in Washington for us Washington hunters? How about that? Then I could hunt ducks with ya all.

Yep, have permit, will travel. That's a good deal on a quality hunt. The perks of Ifish never end, do they.

Get Bit,
I'd like more details, I could be coaxed into seeing how the pro's do it. Curiosity kills me sometimes, glad I'm not a goose. Keep me posted.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Okay guys: The trip would amount to a 1 day guided goose hunt. The most likely scenario would be first to figure out if we can put together 10 guys. The next step would be to decide on a date that works for the majority. After that we would divide into groups of 5 with one group hunting with Dave Smith and the other 5 hunting with Brad Cochran. They hunt with Dave Smith Decoys,Saunders calls, and Eliminators with Whoop grass. I think this covers everything. P.S. Maybe we can work out a group breakfast, lunch, after we finish. Should be about 8:30 am with Brad and Dave calling.Hope this covers everything.

I will take a day off to do this hunt, so ANY day works for me. Some things are more important than work, and this is one of 'em.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
I have duck hunted a lot, but never goose hunted. What is involved with getting a permit? Is this the same thing as the ID course? Is it too late to do these things this season? Sounds like fun.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Get Bit,
I'd go just to meet you and Skein. If we get 5, let's do 5. If more pop up, we'll work on the next 5. I'd prefer a weekday (Wed/Thur).
We should at least meet for b-fast prior, and arrange a pm brunch for story telling.
I'd like to bring my dog, he fits nicely next to my legs in an eliminator.
I'd say, sooner the better!

I will fill a spot. I have hunted with them two other times and I am going again. We use to have to work to get a few geese but thats not the case anymore. For anyone wanting to learn how to hunt the control zone and put birds in your bag it well worth it.

Clackman,
They normally get $200 for a hunt. Everyone I've talked to says they're worth every dime of it.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
For answers to many of your questions check out www.cochranandsmith.com
The normal cost is $200 a day. I've got to have a weekend to do it. If we can't work something for this season, we can always start planning a big one for next. Heck, we may even get this year and next worked out.
Wak,
This is the ID test permit. I think you can still arrange to take the test through ODFW. I don't think there is anymore scheduled.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Sounds like a blast and a great opportunity to learn from the best.
I will say I am tentative, depending on whether 'she who must be obeyed' will let me come out and pay to play. Again it would have to be a weekend. Are we looking at the end of period 2 or at period 3 for this?
Its a great deal at $140, so I better go cut some lawns and earn some extra cash.
GB Thanks for setting this up.

No problem setting it up. Looks like a weekend in period 3 will work best for everyone. Hopefully we can come up with the 10 or more. This is going to be awesome guys !

I'm in, however I will need make it fit around my work schedule which is somewhat flexible. If it is on a weekend there is no problem, except Feb 22-23.
I need to learn from the pros about blowing the short reed call, goose identification and covering up.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
OK, count me in...probably for two and here's the deal if you guys wouldn't mind...
The sports editor agrees this might be a good anchor story for our September HUNT section...I can bring a photographer (we'll each pay the $140 or even the $200) and he would shoot photos of the guides and you guys...we'll also do some hunting, I'll interview (pretty loose term with me...we'll talk together) and maybe even buy breakfast...
If this doesn't happen this year, I'll call the guides myself and book with someone other hunters of their choosing, but it would be more fun with you all...
And, as usual, I have floaters...will travel at any time...

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Okay guys here what it looks like so far:
Get Bit
Skein
Gun/Rod/Bow
Oregon Wrestler-tentative
Steelie Hunter
Clackman - 2
Lured In - tentative
Fishy Fingers
Bill Monroe - 2
North River1
Bounty Hunter
Gooseman
Bill thanks for the idea. No objections here !
That's 14 people in my book. Now we need to talk date. The 3rd season is Feb. 8 - March 2. Weekends are Feb. 8,9 15,16 22,23 March 1,2.
My suggestion would be to shoot for the last day of the season. March 2 ? Anyone else ?

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
March 2? What's the odds of still getting a good hunt? I expect to learn a lot, have some fun, meet some of you guys - but I still want to get into the geese.
What does Smith and Cochran say? What do you more experienced goose hunters say?
I'm flying a little blind on this one.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Skein...based on the rumor mill, Dave and crew could limit out in the middle of summer. JK
Seriously though, I don't think the date will matter all that much. I do know that there are others like me that do more goose hunting during the 3rd period simply because duck is closed.
GB...If there is still room, can I bring a friend or are we maxxed out?
Also did you get any indication from Dave on how he would accomodate us? Multiple spread, different fields, rotate in the blinds? Just curious.

The geese do not begin to move north in earnest until late march. Early march should mean that they will begin to stage a little and more birds from farther south could be in the area. Early march is very good on the island. Your guides know their fields better than anyone and it really should be their call as to when if you want the best shoot. If they leave one or two of their properties rest the geese should hit those fields. Remember these birds eat a lot and increase their feeding before the big move north.

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Hi guys- thanks for the responses! here is more info: the March 2nd date is actually a good one for our current schedule and also for staging birds as bigshark nailed it. One thing that could very likely occur though, so keep this in mind: we may find just one super-coupe and set up the whole gig on one field. Great way of us all getting to know each other- hehe. I think we will have to put the cap at 14 for this hunt, maybe more next season. Again, thank you all- Brad and I are looking forward to hunting with you guys and post up with any questions. Dave

Re: IFISH Permit Zone Goose Hunt
Dave, et al,
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, but remember it's pretty crucial for us to get shots of hunters shooting geese...not posed meat shots, of course, but preferably guys with raised guns and birds overhead, etc...and that's the last chance.
I certainly don't wanna interfere with the hunt success, so you might wanna give some thought to how you'll factor us in...I'm experienced with geese (but promise to probably not try to call) and will bring someone to shoot photos who also is savvy...
Call me sometime and give me some ground rules so we won't screw everyone up...I also have a few dozen floaters and other decoys, but from your reputation sounds like I may not need them...
My daughter is a former checkstation worker at Greenberry (Cale and McPherson country) and I've covered the duskies since 1976 (including with their dads)...
In fact that's the week for the winter flyway meeting...
I'm at 888-222-8231...really looking forward to this.
Thanks,
Bill

Sweet!
Dave...when do we need to have deposits, etc to you? (Not to step on your toes GB, just trying to think ahead) Also can you give us a list of things we need to bring for this shoot. While I have my my usual choke/load combo, what do you recommend for your hunts? (I know its different for every gun, but a rough idea would be nice.)
This is going to be a hoot. It'll be fun finally being able to place a face with a name.

Lured In,
Not stepping on any toes. Tryed to call Dave last night , no luck. Will keep trying until we are able to talk. I think we need to plan on the March 2nd date. Dave if you would put us down for that date please ? Now all that remains is paying deposits etc. Looks like 14 will have to be the limit. From the looks of the board, we have that # no problem. Skein, I like sausage Mcmuffins !

Not to steal Skein's breakfast thunder, but perhaps there is a good early morning restaurant around that we can meet at prior to setting up. I don't know if there will be enough time, given Dave's plans to cover a whole field with dekes. If not a post hunt feast is a definite.

Just a note about that time of year for Goose Hunting is that actually you could get additional birds moving back north as a bonus.
