Default Saturday Surprise Birds

With all this rain I was sure that all the birds had flown into the valley......WRONG ! Had to get some things done around the place because of the recent storms so decided to not go down the valley and go out for a short time to the island just so I could say I went. About 10AM wow! To the south it sounded like a war. Volley after volley, anyone with a desire to go tomarrow on the public land, my guess is Johnson would be the place. Racetrack should be good as well. Lots of bird coming off Sturgeon. I don't understand why they are here and not in all the sheet water in the valley............Oh well, I'm not complaining, just
confused as usual. Darn things never were very predictable. Anyway, the south end of the island may be what you want to consider.

Boy, down at my end of the island it was slooooow. We could count on one hand the volleys each club took, about 0-4 all morning per club. We were on the 0 side for duck opportunities.
Labsforme, please get those geese outta there. You need to share!

Bigshark,
It seemed that maybe every club got one opportunity in the first 10 minutes and then pfffft.
There were clouds of Pintail running with the wind just before shooting.

I took my Dad out today on the Westside, got one of my favorite blinds on Steelman and ended up with 11 birds by noon. Lots of singles and a few pairs passing through.

We couldn't hardly see our farthest decoys, which made it interesting trying to drop the teal in the fog.

So far it was my best day on the Island this year, and I thought the day was going to be a bust with all the stars out last night.

Good luck,
Andy

Way to go Andy ! It's great to go not expecting much and coming home soooo glad
that you went. That will be one of the trips to remember when the season ends and we dream of the next. Those bright bluebird days will also fool a lot of guys. Seems mallards like to cruise in the sunshine looking for a good time. We had good success in that early dry and sunny spell. We thought it might be that we had flooded the back lakes and had lots of water showing. Anyway glad you had a good shoot.

We could hear the point or old B&O and sombody else down that way. We could also hear what we assumed was Fazio's. Lots of big volleys, figured you guys must have been into them bigtime......I'm surprised it was slow for you , from all the shooting we were hearing we thought the south end was getting all the birds. Our action didn't last long, it started when we got a little wind around 10 and lasted about an hour or a little more. It was a surprise to us and sure made it worth going. Mostly mallards but those pintails are sure giving us the raspberry. Can't convince me the darn things don't know they are safe.

Tilla, I wasn't able to get out until around 1 pm and I tried to shoo some your way.I did short stop two of them however.I also got a greenhead on one of the back lakes that's flooded wheat stubble.I didn't see anything but geese moving until dark. You should have seen the birds pouring out then, flight after flight of just about every type of bird.Lots of mallards,Sprig, and Widgeon,of course all after shooting time's over.I'll be out Wednesday.Ya'll have good shooting everyone.
