Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
I did and almost got my Goose card pulled.
The bill lenght is longer than the Dusky and the color was not as dark. I swore it was not a dusky and Thankfully a experienced checker knew the difference and spoke up.

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
IMHO if you shoot a Vancouver you need re-evaluate your philosophy on what you shoot. Yes, I know there are those that claim they can tell the difference and they might actually be able to.
The one thing to remember is when in doubt, don't shoot.
If you walk a thin line long enough, you will step over it.

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
Along with the bill length being longer than a Dusky it's a bigger bird too...same size as a western,,,not quite the chocolate brown but pretty dark........................

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
If you start believeing your seeing a Vancouver and not a dusky, especially if it's a single, I can pretty well gurantee you'll be shooting duskies.
Regardless of what the technical specifications are, on the wing, it better have a light belly, skinny wings or a real short neck to pull the trigger.
A couple years ago, my buddy and I passed a single because it looked dark, but it did have a really long neck (like a honker). It landed about 75 yards away. We both glassed it, and I'm pretty sure it was a Vancouver. It looked more grey than brown, distinct line at base of neck, long neck, real long beak, etc. Outside of that I have witnessed probably 250-300 birds taken in the past 7 yrs. I or buddies have checked snows, specs, an "eagle headed" blue goose and a brant along with all the usual suspects. Never seen a Vancouver checked. But that could be because I hunt the North Valley.
Good Luck
Be carefull

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
Tulley- Vancouver Canadas are so incredibly rare in the Valley that you will almost never encounter one. On the Lower Columbia, the odds go up SLIGHTLY. Vancouvers are real homebodies- home being the coastline of British Columbia. MANY "Vancouvers" that are checked in on the Lower Columbia are actually "Wesky's"- a Western/Dusky cross that has resulted from the early 70's transplanting of Dusky's to establish a resident flock. The WDFW is now spending lot's of $$ to try and remove these from the population as they are crossing with Western Canadas and producing resident "nuisance" Geese that nobody can shoot because they are too dark. We put white neck collars on a few of the each june so that they can be shot in the fall.

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
Now one quick question. What is a Vancouver's goose? Never heard of them, or is there a different name for them. Right now I'm thinking of the Columbia River basins AKA b52s aka basin geese.
If someone could post a picture of one of these Vancouver goose that would be helpful, I may know what it is but not this name you guys are using.
Thanks.

Re: Has anyone ever shot a Vancouver goose?
Big and dark are bad.
Shoot the white bellies and the stub necked cacks. They are money in the bank. Problem is the Tavs. They are about the same size as duskies.
A guy we hunt with can tell the differnece by the honks and the wings. I am deaf( mostly) and I don't have the zillions of hours of field experience he does. I shoot Cacks and Honkers. Big, dark, stupid= no more goose season.
Mark and the dog.
