A Medford man is in hot water after reportedly confusing a swan with a goose and shooting the protected bird.

It happened at the Denman Wildlife Refuge.

But Oregon State Police said Walton ended up cooking his own goose when the Medford resident admitted he didn't have a hunting license. And he is a convicted felon prohibited from using firearms.

The 31-year-old Walton was cited and released on Sunday.

He was charged with unlawfully taking protected game, hunting without a license and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Court records show that Walton had been convicted of first-degree burglary in 1992.

According to state police, swan can't be hunted at Denman Wildlife Refuge.

And hunters must have a license and state and federal waterfowl stamp to hunt there.

Tulley - good luck in figuring out the censoring that is done by the moderators. I agree with you and Jen that freaking shouldn't be censored.

But then again, I'm no expert on the subject - having had a posted joke deleted, with no explanation, and in another posting had the word "********" censored, again with no explanation. Guess someone needs to talk to the folks on TV and get the popular animated comedy show's title changed to "Beavis and B***head". :whazzup:

I think it would be very helpful if those doing the censoring would follow up with an explanatory email to us criminals so we can straighten up and fly right. :grin: :blush:

Born to Fish - I sure appreciate your assumption that the mods are censoring you (dripping sarcasm) but most of the word censoring is done with automated software.

Try to be sensitive to the fact that this site is read by a lot of people who prefer not to be exposed to "adult" language. It really does not make a stronger case for an arguement, anyway.

If you are censored and wondering, drop me an e-mail and I will find out what happened and why. If I ever censor you, I will be sure to let you know about it.

I would hope the feds would enforce the felon in possesion of a firearm offense, but i doubt it. People whine about this country and it's "Gun Problem". We would'nt have half the problem if the states and feds would enforce the current regs. OSP says we can't hunt swans at denman, like it's OK to hunt them elsewhere in Oregon, I think not!!

It seams to me he should have been held until a large bail was posted, at the least

Crabbait - no further explanation needed. Didn't give thought to the possible use of software - not up on this techno geek stuff - oops, hope no one takes exception to that.

But, like I said, if a mod is taking the action I believe that a follow up email would be appropriate and helpful not only to the writer but also to assist in the learning curve.

I would not intensionally use language in a media such as this knowing that someone would be offended. If that has been the case, my apologies but since there hasn't been any long drawn out threads in this respect I can only presume that this has not been the case.

Interestingly enough, I have seen plenty of personal bashing, and creative use of letters and symbols that not only have gotten out of hand but could be construed as offending. But as I said previously, I had the option to pass over the stuff and not interact.

Enough said on the subject. You do your thing for the good of the masses. Your efforts, and those of Jen and the other mods are truly appreciated. This is an excellent web site that obviously brings many hours of enjoyment and education to a large audience. [img]graemlins/applause.gif[/img]

The Mods have almost always ( :shocked: they only edited me once with out asking :shocked: ) given me the opportunity to self edit. :smile: The rules they have here is why I like this site. :smile:

Keta, guess I'm not all that familiar with the rules - other than what would be the obvious.

Since you mentioned it, I had noticed on a few occasions where it indicated that the writer had edited the message - since I'm still fairly new to this I really didn't understand what was going on there. Presumed that since the writer may be a mod in some other topic, they were allowed to edit their own messages regardless of where they were posted.

Oh well, I'll bungle along, learning as I stay active in this web page. Thanks for your input.

The program has a list of words that you can use. There are words in that list (which is huge!) that I have taken out, since I don't think they are as offensive as they do... Such as damn, hell, etc.
Please, if you have a word edited out, we don't know it. It's automatic. Let us know, ESPECIALLY if you don't think that word to be bad.
They had "dink" in the words to be edited. Now, I know that that can be construed as a dirty word, but heck, this is a fishing and hunting board, and I use dinks all the time for fishing. This just wasn't a good one for us!
So, help us, let us know, if there is anything you don't understand. We always try and e mail you a notice... There are times when we don't. When the post was so offensive that there is no question of it's edit. That, of course, usually goes with a banning! :smile:
There has only been a couple of those, though.
But, please help us out, and if you have questions or complaints, we are here to listen.

I was interested to see your comments about the word "dink." While I agree that this term should be removed from the censored list, I wish you could do something for us over here in Idaho on Salmon Falls Creek reservoir where the walleye caught are often referred to as "dinks" [which is an expression of their disappointingly small size]. As a result, I'll buy an annual non-resident license for Oregon this year and spend my walleye fishing time on the Columbia. :grin:
