Default The New Kid

I'm new to ifish and thought I would post and see if anyone "bites" on any of my questions...

I mostly fly fish for trout but I haven't done a lot of fishing the last few years, except the occasional weekend in Central Oregon. I need suggestions about where to fish near Portland. I especially want to get out after work (Oregon City area) but where can I go and wade and catch a few trout?

I also want to learn how to tie flies (I have the equipment but could use some lessons). I want to get into steelheading, too. All suggestions or instruction welcome!

I'm in the market for fishing buddies, too. My guy friends don't fly fish and my girl friends don't fish at all. What the heck is wrong with these people???

I've enjoyed reading the threads in this forum and look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to IFish Flyfish.
If you live in Oregon City, the Clackamas is an obvious choice for steelhead and salmon. (This is actually just a rumor. I have not yet succeeded in bringing a salmon or steelhead to the fly there.) But it is right there in O.C. The Molalla is smaller scale and also close to O.C., but I have never fished it.

Good Luck. Tell us when you catch a fish. Or just make something up like the rest of us.

Welcome flyfishgirl!

Not sure what to suggest to "fix" your friends. Maybe introduce your girlfriends to fishing properly by teaching them to fly fish. Then once they get the hang of it they can convert your guy friends by outfishing them with flies!

Can't help you much with tying trout flies, but there's no shortage of experts here in that department.

I too would suggest the Clack since it is close. I live in Milwaukie and make the occasional trip up river in the summer. Probably next month I'll head up river and give it a try. Let me know if you want to go, I'm not a pro by any means but willing to share what I do know.

I tying get together with a group would be fun. Maybe one of the really good tyers here on the board could put something together?

Hi,

For trout fishing, try the upper clackamas, above north fork res. It's less than an hour from se ptld, and there are many places to pull off the road and fish. The trout are small, mostly 8" or so, but fun and numerous.

As far as tying, I know that River City Fly Shop has classes starting soon.

You might want to check out the Stonefly Maidens women's flyfishing club. My wife and daughter went to their casting clinic, and they learned a lot. They are a good resource for all areas of flyfishing, and seem to be a well organized group. Just do a google search for "stonefly maidens".

Riverkeeper, there are certain critters that I don't play with and that is one of them on that stick.

Welcome FlyfishGirl...

More dangerous than that snake is the dude next to it with his thumb up in the air.

Welcome aboard. Grab a pontoon if you don't already have one and join the toon-a-thon on the 16th. Where are we floating anyhow?

I'll second that...watch out for that guy!

He has been known to throw some pretty cool graphics on your boat when your not looking...

Yeah, and the other two are on either end!!! Wow.

Oh, what I would like to say beyond that! So many snake jokes, so little time...

They prefer to think of themselves as 'snake handlers'... referring to them as 'snake jokes' may hurt somebody's feelings.
So are you joining the toontilla? Maybe Chrome Mandinga will let you use his... seeing as he would rather work than fish.

Welcome aboard flyfishgirl - yea, you got to keep an eye
out for those southern pacific rattlesnakes along the
Deschutes , not to mention us snake charmer types
. Hey, there are some really good rivers on the
Washington side for those Steelies when they come in -
been known to find a few here and there . If
you don't mind a little hard work you can really get
into them - found over the years hiking and searching
is the way to go (boats can't get everywhere!). P.S.
the Klickitat can be a really fun river.
