Go ducks?
All right, so where are the ducks? Not in Scappoose Bay...Heard there are some on the north coast and around Bend...anyone else?
Anyone?

Re: Go ducks?
Not that many towards the south end of Sauvie. The wind didn't help much yesterday.
I'll go back to my Duck theorems. There are no new birds and the birds that are here know where to go to avoid the weather and hunters. Drive West on Hwy 30 about 2-5 miles past the SI bridge and look down below the road.

Re: Go ducks?
I don't hunt them but the river is open below Miller Island and I have deks, a boat and time.
Lost River should be good now too. I have access to a ranch (over 2000 acres) on the Sprague but it is up by Bly and not too many ducks this time of year. If you want to come down let me know and I'll put the prop back on the boat. Next week I'll be up your way for 5 or 6 days but after that I will be here.

Re: Go ducks?
Man I miss the days in college down your way Keta. I hunted 4 days a week from Pheasants at Miller to Honkers out at Agency and Wood River. I was down there recently for a funeral of a relative and we stayed at the Running Y and I forgot how many honkers are around that place. I also used to hunt some land out on the Sprague, but most of it's locked up for leases now isn't it?? Good to hear someone's kicking the birds around down there still.

Re: Go ducks?
Thanks Keta and Skein...lemme know about the central coast. A friend knows Alsea bay pretty well...I'm probably going to be in KFalls next weekend for a few days. May call coyotes on the way down...Saw a few more today, but nothing much interested in landing...they're in Burlington bottoms on and off (west of SI Bridge)...not many today and the swans were gone.

Re: Go ducks?
Bill,
I was thinking with the wind on the coast the lower Columbia might be worth a shot. I've done ok down there this time of year in the past couple of years.
It's a pain dealing with the tides. You really better know the area and pay attention to your tide books.
I'm taking a couple days off next week. If it keeps raining, and the rivers blow out (like they are), I may try down there Tuesday.
If I do I'll let you know.
PS Just talked to my buddy in Hermiston, pretty slow. But he did shoot a couple of Wood Ducks in a cornfield on X-mas afternoon...weird huh?
If we could get one of these storms to turn around and come down from the North, it sure would change things.

Re: Go ducks?
I'm going to head down to the south-central coast in a day or so and see if I can pick any up on the dunes lakes or around Tahkenitch Lake. I've never hunted Tahkenitch, but with all its arms and shallow areas, it seems like a good place for ducks to hide from the big winds. I'll let you know how I do.

Re: Go ducks?
Keta,
Wanna go get some? How are you hunting them, jump shooting, pass shooting, or decoying? I figured you guys were all iced up except for maybe the Sprague - and all locked up behind private land. Tell me more.

Re: Go ducks?
Skein,
If you are heading down towards Tahkenitch good luck. I thought like you that the arms and habitat looked pretty good. I gave it one try last year, and I couldn't find any concentrations of birds there (a few mergansers). Siltcoos has been a better producer (although still not great). I may make a run down there for divers on New Year's Day and could have an extra seat if you want to make a trip. Send me an e-mail if you're interested and I can fire back with details.

Re: Go ducks?
Hunted L & C on Saturday, few birds flying early got 1 mallard, 1 teal and 2 limits of scaups. The limit of scaups came in about 10 minutes after resetting up for them. Had my dog working so hard that he couldn't keep up had to pickup the last 3 with the boat! Got to love scaup shooting and it's always a good fall back for that area when the puddles are slow. Also had 1 chance at some geese, but didn't bring any down.

Re: Go ducks?
I, uh, think they're headed down from Seattle, with most of their tail feathers missing! 38-17 Wakeforest over Oregon.
