Default brush gun?

Should a "brush gun" have a scope or not? I have a remington model 742 and was wonderign if it would serve me better at the coast for short range shots? If a scope what size and power would be best?

Thanks Robert

If your not sure and dont want to chose then maybe see through mounts would be another option. Lets you see under your scope so you can use open sights or your scope. I have them but more often than not I use my scope. If your not doing any distance shooting then a 4x would probly due but I would go with a nice 3-9.

Just my .02

If I was to set your gun up as a brush gun I would just use fiber optic sight.
But when I set up my rifle for hunting over here in brushy areas, I put a 4 power scope on it.

For your situation, I prefer a low powered variable (1x4, 1.5x5, etc.). A lot of it depends on what you are more comfortable with.

If I am using "iron" sights, I prefer a good peep sight.

On my deer rifle I use a Leupold 2.5X8 and when it is turned down it has a wide field of vision. But if you are taking close shots in the pouring rain I would stay with open sights.

depends on your own preference. All my rifles wear scopes, and in my opinion, it it much faster to get on target with a low power scope than with open sights. My brush gun has a 3-9 that i hunt with on 3 power, and the closest i have sighted an animal was about ten yards, no problem.

Red Dot Zero-power scope ie C-More is my suggestion for a gun than will be used in shaded less than 50 yd shots. No need to magnify. No need to find iron sites either.

I agree with using a low power variable 1.5-4X
I think a scope improves your ability to shoot well even at short distances.

Thanks for the help. Who makes a low powered scope that has a 40mm objective? I heard from dealer that its hard to mount a low powered scopes, because they are small to rifle in a 30.06. Is there a way to avoid this?

Thanks again Robert.

You don't need a 40 mil objective in a small scope because the amount of light needed isn't nearly as great for low powers. I had a burris 1.5-6x 25 or 30? that you could watch the stars with, crystal clear with low light capabilitles and a wide field of view.
The Formula to figure out exit pupil light is the objective/power. A 3-9x40 has an exit pupil of 5 at 9 power.. From what I have read an exit pupil of 4-5 is all the eye can use, everything else is wasted.

Ghost ring peep or low power scope. The peep won't fog up on you.

You're going to have a tough time finding a low power variable with that large of objective.

I would recommend a Leupold 1.75 x 6 Vari-X III. It is a great scope and has a 32 mm objective.

The Leupold Vari XIII 1-1/2x5 has a small objective lens but is a good clear scope, the same as their 1-3/4x6 but streight (I have one of each). When on 1-1/2 power you have an fast setup. I still would go with a peep for close in work.
