Re: Out of State
I hunt both. There is still some good hunting to be had here, if you are willing to work for it. Other states seem to have it figured out better than the powers that be do here. I like the more liberal season lengths, more road closures, fewer hunters, and of course, more animals!!

Re: Out of State
Compared to Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado and many or the Mid-west states Oregon is "PATHETIC". I sometimes can't believe I still hunt here at all. Most of the time you wait for a Eastern Oregon tag for 2 or 3 years and you have to settle for a little Forky or something. These other states have the amimals and the seasons. I'm not a trophy hunter at all, but I still like to have a reasonable opportunity to harvest a decent animal or at least see some. I have shot my fair share of decent deer, close to 40 bucks, but we still don't even come close to dozens of other states. I hope we can recover sometime before my boy's get old enough to hunt. Kris.

Re: Out of State
I have seen some very nice animals on the East and West side of the cascades, I miss hunting in Idaho, but I have seen and killed more Elk in the last 10 years here then I ever did in Idaho. I think Oregon has some great hunting, maybe not as good as it used to be but still pretty good. The big deal for me is, I can hunt Elk here or in Idaho, Wyoming, Mont... But this is the only place I can spend the rest of the year on the Ocean. Its a big tradeoff.

Re: Out of State
I've not had the opportunity to hunt in Oregon. But it has to be a great deal better than the poor quality of the Washington hunt. This game dept. is made up of phony bioligists with GED credentials and wear sandles in the field. What, me upset?

Re: Out of State
Yes, I have heard that Wahington has poor hunting. I think Oregon is heading inthe same direction. I think we have to many "bunny Huggers" running the game department and not enough that look out for the hunters that pay their wages. I do know a few that are the real deal and care about game and hunters the same, but most I meet and talk to are not looking out for us. I truely think hunters care more about the game than most of the other public and officials.
Oregon is still fun to hunt, but for what I've seen in my 30 years of hunting, it doesn't come close to a lot of the other states. I do think we'll get there someday, but most likely not in my lifetime. Have a great season and good luck, KRis.

Re: Out of State
Sounds like you've got it figured out pretty good. I spent the weekend onthe ocean out of Newprt last weekend myself ona buddies boat. Good job on the elk slaying. I was averaging a bull three out of four years about ten years ago, than my unit went belly up. I've only hunted Idaho twice for elk and I shot a 5 pt. my first time their. Didn't get one the second time. I'm going archery hunting in September in Idaho this season. I still have a lot to learn about Idaho, but when I do the critters better watch out . Well i'd better get busy. See ya, Kris.

Re: Out of State
Oregon is #2 in amount of elk, Colorado being first. It kind of sounds like it's only fun for some people to kill an elk to have fun and that is a shame. If I never killed another animal I would still cherish my time afield and so should everybody else. It's called hunting, not killing.

Re: Out of State
Dude, don't go hugger on me! I never said that I don't like the hunt itself for in fact I cherish every moment out in the woods hunting elk. I like to at least see elk when I'm hunting and when I go ten day's without so much as smelling one where I used to see several a day I happen to get a little discouraged. It's only human nature! I fact, once you do shoot an elk it really is a lot of work, but it's worth it every step of the way. As a hunter I can only stand looking at trees so long  I've spent the last 3 seasons doing just that. All I'm saying is it's time for a change. I'm a native Oregonian and love this state, but overall it's big game hunting just doesn't compare to many. Sure it's better than a lot and I know that, but that still doesn't change the fact that our big game hunting quality if declining. Besides, my wife and kids really bust my chops when I don't return with elk meat. They really love it. Kris.

Re: Out of State
I hunt Wyoming for antelope every other year because I can get a tag any time, plus we have a ranch to stay/hunt on when we go over there.
Oh yeah, and because antelope are fun to hunt.
I don't think that there's a thing wrong with Oregon's hunting. I wish there were as many blacktails in the woods as there were 20 years ago, and I wish that there were fewer cougars out there, but I don't think that the ODFW is to blame for either of those circumstances. I can still drive 30 minutes from my home and be hunting for deer, elk, bear, cougar, upland, waterfowl, turkeys...no complaints here.
