E.E.Wilson rabbits
Went out to E.E.Wilson today with a couple of friends and hunted cottontails behind beagles. I had never done that before and it was a real kick. They explained the drill to me while the dogs went to work, and in just a few minutes (moments really) the dogs were working a rabbit. Of course they could tell a lot more from the tenor of the dogs' baying than I could, like who was leading and how far behind it they were. I could tell pretty much which direction they were working, but that was about it. We got a lot more shooting than we did rabbits, but I managed to bring home three to cook up. They are sooooo good!
E.E.Wilson is a perfect place for my buddy to hunt since he is wheelchair bound and can't crash through the brush like the rest of us. The nature of his injury is such that he can't lift the shotgun very high either, so ground-bound targets are the best. The dog-handlers were mostly members of the Mary's Peak Hounds Club, and all I can say is, "Thanks ladies and gents, it was a real treat!"

skein-
Do you have any way to get a hold of the hound club? I have a young beagle and not much experience training. I have heard to never let one off a leash because it won't come back so I am interested on how they hunt with beagles. I have heard of this hound club and the good work they do but have never figured out how to contact them.

Re: E.E.Wilson rabbits
Hey skein, who did you hunt with?
I used to hunt rabbits out there a few years ago with some guys with beagles and a friend in a wheelchair too. A lot of fun! those rabbits can be hard to hit. Just wondering if we hunt with the same guys, Gerry and Del?

Re: E.E.Wilson rabbits
Grits,
I don't know the hounds club group very well, but my friend does. I'll see if I can get you a contact. There were probably three young dogs out there learning to run with the pack, but from what they jokingly explained to me, "If you can call one back off a scent trail, he's not a good enough hunter." I guess beagles get, shall we say, focused when they smell a rabbit. I don't think you "train" beagles - I think you're just along for the ride.
Sean,
Yep, Gerry and Del. I hunt and fish with Del a lot. In 2001 we got him an elk, his first badger, and his first shad. When he got done shad fishing he said, "Man, I've never been so tired from fishing!" We had one of those "every cast" days. Let's all get together one of these days.

Re: E.E.Wilson rabbits
Grits,
Sorry I was so long getting this information to you. It seems everybody is busy with Christmas  and running in twelve different directions.
The number I have for the Hounds' Club contact is Jerry (Treasurer) at (541) 745-7311.
They also said that it's best to run your beagle with others so he can get the idea and learn the ropes better. If you want to set up a day to bring your dog and go with us, you are welcome. Just let me know and I will try to line up a hunt.
All I can tell you first-hand is that it's a lot of fun, and these are a nice bunch of guys.
Come hunt with us!
