Default Desolation Unit

Considering hunting the Desolation unit next year for elk if i dont draw a tag. Any out there ever hunted that area and would like to share some information on the unit. Not asking for your favorite spot, just some informative information re roads, closures, kind of country, camping spots, etc. Thanks in advance to all who post on this. I have hunted all over the state of Oregon, just never in this unit. Thanks.

Cagey- I am assuming you are thinking of doing the spike hunt since you said this was an option if you didn't draw a tag. When the season gets closer I can give you a lot of information on this unit. I have hunted it for 10 years my dad for 30. I scout several times throughout the summer and will be bow hunting it this year. The only word of caution as you plan your trip is most of the unit no longer allows four wheelers if that is your method of travel and you have to be prepared to walk.

We did the spike-only hunt this year, with no success. The hard part is making sure that your target is a spike. We saw a couple of bulls, but in the timber you couldn't verify that there was only spikes. we did okay the year before with first season tags, but it was any bull. One draw back to this area, is by the time spike-only season starts, there has beeneer season, followed by 800 cow tags a week later, followed by 1700 any bull tags a week after that. You then add 1800 spike-only hunters, and the animals are pretty skitish. I did get a bear, but no elk.
