Gun Safe...for you and yours
Safes,,,, unitl I got a family I didn't worry much about safes, I have always treated guns with the "respect" that they deserve. Once my family arrived, I pondered the best storage for my guns, so that those that were not as careful wouldn't be tempted to touch, feel, experiment.
What I arrived at was a safe with a combination lock... as I didn't want any keys to be found by any little hands over the coming years. There are many more inexpensive styles out there that use keys, but this was a key issue for me..NO KEYS.
However, I also don't have a huge stock of guns like many of you, just the necessary ones of course. AND I didn't want to spend high triple digits or thousands of bucks for one either.
The safe I ended up buying is the Sentry, it is the most inexpensive gun safe with a combination lock that I could find with reasonalbe size for several guns.
Why am I sharing this....I saw this safe on sale right now at BiMart, and if you have had thoughts on this topic like me and haven't acted upon it yet, now is a great time to do so...buy your family this gift for 299.
This safe isn't as fire resistant as many, but if my guns burn they burn, I got other problems if that happens. And all serious documents etc... are in safety deposit box.
Additional note....be careful with your guns...I heard on the news monday that some man, shot his grandaughter by (I can't say accident) by being negligent. he pointed a black powder rifle at her to scare her and pulled the trigger. it was loaded.

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
Excellent post.
Remember to bolt it to the floor, concrete or wood.

Great idea Gus,
To those who don't wan't to spend the money for a safe, trigger locks are $10.00 . If you ever have kids around your house, you need locks or a safe. It's less than a box of amo, great stocking stuffers  if you know someone without.
There is no such thing as gun accidents, just gun stupidity

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
YEP, lagged mine to the wall and floor both. i care more about it not falling over onto a little one (or me for that matter) than it getting packed out the door.

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
Buy one that is fire proof and you can write it off on your taxes!
Actually, I don't think it needs to be fire proof to write it off, you just need to make sure you keep valuable documents in it, ie; vehicle titles, bonds, etc. I wouldn't think you'd keep such documents in something that wasn't fire proof, but people have done smarter things.

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
I just went out a bought a homak key gun safe that holds 12 guns. I like the safe, its a nice one for the money. Only like $120 bucks. No, its not no fire line safe but it will keep my little brother out of them. Also it looks good in my room. Its my first gun safe and I think that I'm going to have to up grade to something a little bigger next year. I'm going to need a new safe that will hold 15 or more long guns. How many guns does your Sentry hold?

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
I think the Sentry is 14 guns...and it isn't full, although the wife doesn't know that. As far as she is concerned I have one of everything and nothing is ever "new" When you get to the point of being serious with somebody , never be specific about what you have or don't have ...keeps your options open. All of home depot, the RV store, and GI Joes fits in my garage I just have real good storage techniques

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
I was thinking about buying one but have questions on fireproofing. Do the fireproof safes actually work in the event your house burns down?

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
I bought one last year that had a fire rating of 90 minutes. I think for the most part, your stocks will be peeled and whatnot but my understanding is that your ammo will be safe! I spent $900 on mine though-24 guns--I will say, by bigger than you think you'll even need.

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
I have an American Security, big one, that's got the 90 minute fire rating at some temperature, don't remember what. To be honest, I didn't bolt it down, because it weighs 760 lbs, and if someone wants it that bad, well, bolts through the particle board floor probably won't slow 'em down.
Took 2 of us, both big boys, to wiggle it into the house using a large heavy-duty dolly with straps. It's all I can do to tip it up to get something under it, so I'm not too worried about falling over.
Good post....if you have kids, they're a must-have investment. You can teach your kids all about guns, and keep them accessible around the house(that's how I was raised), but sooner or later, they'll have friends over, and some parents absolutely freak over guns in the house.

Re: Gun Safe...for you and yours
Great post Gus, I bought one also when I had my son. Before that I never thought it was necessary, having a family really changes your values. I have a Liberty 25 gun safe and bought it at Northwest Armory. They will make you a good deal at the Sportsman's Show, because they don't want to move them back to the store. This is second one that I have had and I have been extremely pleased with both.
