Default Joined the ranks of stick flingers....again!

I officially re-joined the bow-hunting world again today. My wife was sick of my looking around and whining, and FORCED me to buy a new bow today! . I had shot quite a few, and ended up purchasing a Hoyt Magnatech. It just felt "right". Headed out to Carlton tomorrow for some shooting, and hope to shoot 2x per week for the next couple of months to get into form. I just need to get this big belly out of the way, so I can be ready to do the extra hiking work as well.

Norm,
Sorry to have to correct you, but bow hunting is not a blast. Rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader hunting can be appropriately described as a blast. Bow hunting is more correctly described as a "thhhwap".

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

TR,
Congrats on the new bow. Even without hunting, shooting a bow is always a lot of fun.
Enjoy,
Chum King

You must tell us about this whining technique. Works pretty slick to whine yourself into some cool toys. !

Congrats on the new bow...is it the new 2003 model or the 2002? I have the 2002 and love it. Was lucky enought to take a deer in both WA and OR with it this fall! I just saw the new models and think it may be time for an upgrade.

It's a 2003. Couldn't find a 2002 left anywhere that would fit, I have stubby-arm disease   26.5" draw. I'm glad I got the 2003, because it has the new dual Cam and 1/2 system. It smokes, and it's QUIET!!

Headed out this evening for a little barn shooting. I'm stoked. Still deciding on which release, I know I don't like the straight wrist-strap ones, I'm playing with the full hand-glove type.

TR,

Welcome to the camo clad hord!

There are deffinitely a lot of people going to the "string gun" now.

I love my Mathews, both huntin' buddies have new Hoyts and they love theirs.

If it "feels right" to you then it is right.

My advice is to spend enough time shooting to develop a good form. Spend lots of time scouting if you want to actually kill something.

The best money I ever spent in bow shooting was an hour lesson at Archer's Afield in Tigard.

I shot for a couple of years and hit where I aimed most times, but, they taught me a good grip and things that really helped in tuning my bow and getting my broadheads to fly like my field points. Also how to re-serve a string, re-string my bow etc...

Things I needed to know prior to a week in Alaska just me and my bow. Another story.....

I wish I had done the lessons earlier.

Ask for Leroy.

Good Luck!

Rouge

Don't worry about the belly, it's very helpful in not looking like your a real threat to the animals. They look at you and don't take you seriously. Works as good a full camo...

I have the Winn free-flight.Not sure if you familiar with it, but it's a glove type. It's a comfortable release, and I think that it makes the draw weight feel a little lighter. They are a little expensive, but I shoot quite a bit and havn't had any problems with mine. By the way I'm jealous of that new bow!

6wapiti6....that's the release I bought. The glove is mighty stiff, so it's going to take a while to get it broke in.

The guys I went with last night out to Carlton are GOOD!!!!! Even though I've been pumping iron for the last couple of months, I could only shoot about 40 times before I got really shaky. Of course, my bow is cranked up to 70lbs....may change that.

Rouge, I'm with bigshark on this one, when the animals see the big belly and shaggy beard they double up and start laughing. this will give you a couple of extra seconds for the shot.
Welcome to the brotherhood of the bow. once you go thwack you'll never go back.

Rogue,
I was wondering what type of arrows your going to be shooting? Carbons or aluminum. With carbons you should be able to get those things to scream....

Carbon.....

My old high school friend was pretty disgusted at what Archer's Afield sold me....but the arrows are pretty freakin fast!! 252 fps through a chronograph.

Got a lot of work to do, that's for sure!

Lightline, I appreciate the offer!! Definitely going to try to shoot tomorrow afternoon at a friends house, need to go out and pick up some straw bales and a "foam" target. Don't know if I'll have the time to get into the 3D scene, although I know it's tremendous practice and experience.

TR, Lifting and pumping just doesn't work the back muscles shooting a bow does. It will come and pretty fast if your back is in good shape....just don't over do it. Give yourself a few weeks at 2-3 times a week and you will be shooting over a 100 arrows a night with no difficulty. I have picked my bow up after a long off time and really torqued my shoulder. That put me out for a month.

And shooting 252fps, you can afford to drop down at least 5 or more pounds (on your bow ) and get your accuracy up while building the muscle control.

Have Fun with that toy!

Rogue,
I dont know what arrows they sold you but if you are looking for speed go to the gold tips. I am shooting a 27" arrow 264 fps at 65 lbs. Beman makes really light arrows for blistering speed and there is a new one out that is called a cheetah.

Well what ever you go with good luck this year

TR-

I hope you saved some money to buy some "forest" camo to replace the "urban" camo you use for salmon fishing.

Hey, what's wrong with the release that is hanging on the end of your arm? You know...the one with the finger nails. I always know where mine is and never have a malfunction.

When I pull a trigger, I expect something to go BOOM!!!
