Default My Duck report

Well, the day started when I got home. I thought to my self, I'm going deer hunting. Got up and took stand in my spot, no deer, well I was only there for 10 min but no deer.
All I can hear besides the rain is geese, the big honkers, and ducks flying around.
So I run home, get on the phone and call up a hunting buddy of mine that can hunt honkers. He gets over here and we take off. We have like 30 min before its to dark to shoot.
First stop, the pond. We could see ducks on the water, 26 mallards I counted. So we get on them and they start to fly away. Well, he says not to shoot. So he pulls out his call and turns them ducks right around, right over us. I pop off 3 shots and drop 3 mallards. He pops off 2 shots and drops 2 mallards.
Next stop, the swamp fields.
We are just jumping the ducks here. Did not even get to the beaver ponds and there are ducks in the creek, 4 take off and I pop off one shot and drop one. I would have shot more but they were to far out. Keep walking and OMG, ducks everywhere.
To keep a long story short, we did not even make it to the geese cause we put down two limits of ducks and it got dark to quick. And the geese are flying really low, only 300-400 yards way

So, lets see. Ducks/geese or deer hunting tomorrow. What one to hunt. So many to chose from so little time.

It's pretty cool that the weather that blows out the rivers is ideal for waterfowl. Boy this time of year sucks!

Went out in the morning today. Just walked over to a pond down the road. There was 15 big mallards on it. Got about 80 yards from them and they took off.

I need to get into calling, I could have easily turned these ducks around.
Any one recommend some duck calls for a newbie caller.

Kingfisher,

I already replied on your other directed post about types of calls. Now that I see you haven't been doing much calling previously, I have a few words of advice:

1.) Calls will help bring in ducks, turn ducks, and bring ducks back... sometimes.
2.) Calling can flare birds and a good rule of thumb is if the birds are already coming into the dekes, keep quiet.
3.) Get a good call, a training tape, and practice, practice, practice.
4.) Those mallards you spooked off the pond, were not very good candidates to turn with a call. Generally, you are going to be calling to birds that you haven't just spooked.

Good luck,

Watch the wings. The ducks will tell you whether they are workable. If they are gliding along kinda moseying, they are workable with a call. The ducks that are pumping thier wings either are spooked or they have a location locked in their cruise control. As for the calls, I use RNT and Echo acrylic single reeds. Hope this helps.
