Dusky Goose Quotas Reached on Sauvie Island Wildlife Area; Season Closes

PORTLAND - Effective immediately, the Canada Goose season in the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area will be closed for the remainder of the 2002-2003 hunting season. The closure comes after the quota of five Dusky Canada Geese was met in only three hunting days.

The closure does not affect hunting opportunities on private lands on Sauvie Island or other hunt areas in northwest Oregon, which will remain open unless county quotas are reached.

Hunters are reminded to call 1-800-708-1782 before each hunt day for updates on closures.

Waterfowl Season to Re-Open in Eastern Oregon

Second Half of Goose and Duck Season Offers Additional Opportunities

PORTLAND - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to remind waterfowl hunters in Eastern Oregon (Zone 2) that there is still ample opportunity during the current season to harvest ducks, geese and coots.

For ducks, the first period season closed Dec. 3, but re-opens Friday, Dec. 13, in Jefferson, Deschutes, Klamath, Wheeler, Crook, Lake, Harney, Grant, Union, Wallowa, Baker and Malheur counties, and will continue through Jan. 26, 2003. Pintails, however, are an exception. Hunters were allowed to take pintails during the first part of the season, but are not allowed to harvest any during this second half. Due to population declines and habitat loss in drought-stricken areas in Canada, the pintail season was limited to 60 days within the 107-day overall duck season.

For geese, the first period season closed Dec. 3 in Klamath, Lake, Harney and Malheur counties, while the season in all remaining eastern Oregon counties closes Tuesday, Dec. 10. The season will re-open Friday, Dec. 20, in all eastern Oregon counties and will continue through Jan. 26, 2003.

For coots, the season is open concurrent with duck season, which re-opens Friday, Dec. 13, and runs through Jan. 26, 2003.

Hunters are reminded to check the 2002-2003 Game Bird Regulations for specifics regarding particular seasons and bag limits. Information also is available on-line at www.dfw.state.or.us.

I wish I could be calm about such matters, but I can feel that slow burn coming on. Whats the matter with these people? Are there really that many people that don't care? Are there that many people that can't tell the difference?
Think of it this way, there are a heck of a lot of people still bringing up families and can't drop the bucks for a private spot. These guys have screwed hundreds of those people out of a hunt. Are they proud of themselves? Someday we will get our hands on the list of REPEAT offenders and hopefully will be band from ever
private club in the future. I'm venting and will hate myself for it. I just don't believe the bulk of these birds are taken by a true mis-identification. No one is perfect, we can all make mistakes and most of us do, but not like this. So why shoot if your not absolutely sure? Why do you have to hurt others? They need their names published and need to explain it to someone who decides if they get to hunt again the following season or for longer than that. How about no hunting for anything for a year or two?

I gotta bring this up again the permit zone is a joke.. I hunt it and abide by the rules. Now though I hunt two places in sight of the freeway, one on the eastside and one on the west. They are both in sight of each other and on one side I can limit on cacks and tavs in the right conditions fairly regulary and on the other I can wack duskys (because i can only shoot one cack). Its all legal to do which is weird. My question is this is it morally wrong to shoot em even though its legal?
