Default Tagging sturgeon

I was watching a fishing show yesterday and they were catching marlin. Someday I WILL do that but that's off the topic. Anyway, I noticed that each time they brought in a marlin the guide and/or deck hand tagged it. They also said they estimated length, weight and general condition of the fish and recorded all that info as well as location. When I thought about it, in every show I have seen on marlin fishing, I have seen them tagging fish.
So my thought is with our current situation with the sturgeon population why not get the guides involved and have them start tagging fish? I know bios are still scrambling to fully understand this fish and resources seem to be limited from what I have heard. So why not have the guides take a class, give them the proper equipment, and give them a way to accurately record and return the data? I'm sure these guys combined handle more fish in more areas of the river systems than the ODFW/WDFW could ever dream of. Seems like it could work to me and I'm sure the guides would do it. Just a thought .

They already do this in Canada on the Fraser River. I have several of the fish up there with my name on them. It is the guides who do the tagging up there. The Fisheries supplies the tags to the guides. They are a coded tag that goes under the skin and is then read electronicly with a device that the guides have. Your name is on the data sheet that is turned in to the fisheries as being the angler that caught the fish. Length, and girth are measured before releasing the fish.

That program has been going on for many years in Tillamook Bay. I have been tagging fish for several years myself. Well that is the few we manage to catch here on the coast.
