Default Selling handgun

Can someone tell me what the procedure is for selling a handgun to another private party? I'm getting conflicting information as to what's a legal method of transaction. I thought I had to go though a FFL dealer...

Also is it ok to post a handgun for sale in classifieds such as on ifish.net?

I think it's legal to sell your handgun yourself. You have to check with jennie about selling it here, I hope she's not as bad as e-bay about that sorta thing.

I think the FFL is required for shipping/receiving, private sales in person should not require a FFL is how I understand it.

You could sell it under the table.

Private party to private party in Person is legal. If it needs to be shipped it has to go through a FFL on both ends. This apllies to long guns also.

Firedog is correct. Nothing wrong with two private parties selling/buying guns.

As far as I know, there is no rule against selling guns (that are legal to own, of any kind) in the classifieds.

As with any gun transaction, if you are not familiar with the seller you might want to check the serial number against a hot list before you part with your money. If you are not familiar with the buyer, get a drivers license number, etc. If either party feels uncomfortable with the sale, don't proceed!

Never buy a firearm that has an altered serial number.

Where do you find a hotlist? I have been unable to find one on the internet.

Call the state police and they wil be more than happy to look up the serial # for you to see if it is OK.

Call up Gunbroker.com and then go to "For Seller" from there to "Sellers Tutorial" then State-by-State and probably the best is "Firearm Shipping Guide". These should answer all your questions and give you the actual laws. I've never had a problem using this information.
