Where are all the ducks?
That was the question coming from our duck blind this morning over and over. Hunting east of Arlington today with my friend Clint and his fiancee Tonya. We set out every decoy we had between us (approx. 150) in the chilly predawn air. The day had promise as there was low clounds and a light snow falling and a breeze out of the southwest.
The decoys were set perfect, the boat hidden away, the blind was something right out of Ducks Unlimited Magazine. But that all happened about 7.5 minutes too late as the ducks were dropping from the sky fighting for some open water between the decoys as we struggled to put every thing in order with unloaded shotguns.
Once we were finally loaded up, 2 Bluebills and a hen Mallard challenged our scattergun range and came out winners.
Back to the top/ where are all the ducks. There were no large rafts, no doubles or triples flying down the river not even a single with a little bit of curiousity!!
We watched as the weather continued to get better and better as the duck hunting got worse and worse.
But there is a happy ending! Clint and I left Tonya in the blind as we walked to the boat. When we were 100 yard from the blind we hear Tonya get on her goose call and what do you know a Cackling Canada goose falls in love with her and makes a "V" line towards the dekes. The next thing we see is the Cack fold up and drop with one shot!!
Tonya had called in and shot her first goose!
Congrats Tonya
