goose call
Has anyone seen a double-reed (in and out) goose call in a local store? I have one that's wearing out, but dunno if they're even sold anymore. I checked Sportsman's last night in Salem, but nada. Lots of spendy flutes (up to $54!), but no double reeds...

Re: goose call
learn to blow a half breed, They sound so good. Like a tim grounds, or a foiles. They take a bit of learning, but out perform any other call on the market.

Bill
I have never seen what you are looking for. Maybe try Dave Smith and he could possibly put new guts and reeds in your call. If not I would recommed Bill Suanders Guide Series Calls. I can put you in touch with Dave just email me.

Re: goose call
Bill Saunders is the real deal. I have too many calls to think about, but I only blow a few of them in the field. I have never regretted buying quality. I have several hundred dollars worth of junky calls I cannot give away.Save your pennies William.

Re: goose call
Our S. I. goosehunters use the Tim Grounds Half Breed almost exclusively. It's not your typical low moaning "Honker Call". You can get them from Outlaw Decoys in Spokane.

Re: goose call
In order of best tone/sound for me:
Saunders - Excellent pro call. Wide variety of sounds. Very stable over long use periods. makes the higher pitched sounds needed for west side use. Around $150 (acrylic).
Jeff Foiles - Only call I have found in the same class as the Saunders call. Similar technique and sound. Also around $150 (acrylic)
Ground's Half Breed - This call is good and at less tahn half the price of the acrylics, a good value. In my opinion, not in the same class as the acrylic calls.
Primos Short Reed - A good call for beginners. Good variety of sound and ease of use. Not as good as the Half breed and no where near the acrylics but cost is around $35.
Just my opinion and I am no expert caller. The moans and grunts that the acrylics make are real deal makers for geese in close.

Re: goose call
Bill, Knight and Hale makes a Double Cluck Call. Sounds pretty good also. Fishermans and G.I. Joe's have them.

Re: goose call
Yea the price of a short-reed scared me away last year. This year I picked up a Ground's super-mag poly for $75. It's supposed to be one of the easier short's to blow, and I'm very happy with it so far.
In the hand so of a better caller, I have no doubt it will sing (Tim Grounds won the nationals with it I believe). Hopefully I will be that better caller one day soon...

Re: goose call
My point with the Tim Grounds Half Breed call is that it is ideal in pitch for the smaller subspiecies. You can get the high Cackler pitch with it as well as Tavs, and lessers etc.. If I hunt Big Basins, then out comes the Foiles.
One guy has the Big River Honker call and it sounds like nothing I've seen flying before.

Re: goose call
Knight and Hale's Double Cluck Call.
For an inexpensive & good sounding flute, check Sean Mann's web site. http://www.duck-goosecalls.com/
These are good back ups for those who don't voice call.
