Default Late First Post

Well, i can't say i didn't know the "rules" of posting a story as your first post...i did know them....But, i am very new to the salmon fishing thing, and don't have any good stories yet....HOWEVER, when i was looking for an animated avatar, it reminded me of a hunting story i will share...hope that doesn't go too far outside the policies of Ifish!

It was the fall of the year 2001, and blacktail deer season was in full swing. Late October, maybe even the first of November. My Brother and I had made plans to spend a couple days hunting. The last few years we had played around with rattling for blacktails. The first buck we brought in just a year prior to my main story was shot by him (A.K.A. "Novice") at 10 yards....mainly because that was the first time we could see him it was so thick. Sorry, got a little off track....so, last year we hook up and head up Secret Creek...which is on Zipperlip Mountain. We walk through some reprod to a nice stand of loggable timber. I sit down against a tree and get comfy....he moves on ahead about 20 yards and and does the same, both of us looking the same direction. About 50 yards to the right is the edge of the timber, boarderd by more reprod. We sit a few minutes and let things get quiet....real quiet. Then the excitement started...He grunted....I grunted back (tried to sound like two bucks there, not just one) Then he started rattling for a minute or two...It's important to note that as he was rattling, he laid his gun across his lap so the barrel was pointing to the left, with the reprod area to our right. We couldn't have been doing this more that 3-5 minutes when I heard it...THUMP THUMP THUMP CRASH THUMP THUMP...my heart started pounding...i could hear it....after the "crash" thru the brush on the edge of the timber to our right, i saw it....I thought locomotives ran on steel tracks and had wheels....not this one...it was brown, hairy, horny and had 4 legs as it's engines!! I brough my gun up and tried to track this speeding animal...I finally cought up to it and had my crosshairs where i wanted and was starting to squeeze the trigger when i heard...and i quote... "aaaaaahhhhhhhh......BOOM".....Well, the deer went "poof" and disappeared from my scope, and i looked to see where it was....there it was, running away from me! tried to get a good shot...but didn't want to blow all the meat away and the shot i got i missed it. Well, Novice fired one or two more rounds and was sure he hit it. When that deer was coming in, it was on a B line for my brother...all he was trying to do was flip his gun over, point and shoot...didn't have time to aim...maybe he can explain where the scream came from....well, unfortunately, the gun never made the 180 degree arch before it fired....maybe it made it 18 degrees. As i approached Novice, there was a strong fecal matter odor...not sure if it was from him, or if his scream scared the deer that bad. We looked at where the deer had skid to a halt, less than 10 yards away from him. I guess with a buck coming that fast, and that close, i would have screamed too!! we never found the buck...no blood trail or anything...I think Novice was a little more shaky than he thought when he shot actually in the general direction of the buck. After he helped me up from laughing and rolling on the ground, we continued hunting. Didn't see anything else...But boy was it an exciting hunt!!

hopefully the avatar works....Hope it doesn't bring back those terrible nightmares, Novice. I know the Psyche bills were quite high....http://www.animated-gifs.org.uk/agif/ani06.gif

Great story. Sounds like my buddy three weeks ago. He got an opportunity at a trophy blacktail at 7' after a few minutes of rattling but could not get the muzzleloader to fire with the safety on, even with about 100 pounds of trigger pull! D'OH!

Lets just say I had to throw that pair of shorts away once we got back to the house.
Better watch out bro or I will tell the boys about the big one I rattled in for you this year. You remember...The really, really, really BIG ONE that got away because you thought that repositioning yourself, on a bed of dry leaves, when Mr record book buck was a stones throw away was a good idea???? Tell us that story oh "great white hunter" heheheheheheeeee
