there was a wolf shot in the ukiah unit 2 years ago. F&G was up in the area investigating it while we were there. Apparently a guy shot it thinking it was the biggest coyote he had ever seen  Don't know about grizzlys though.

Don't know about any grizzlies. All I know is that many years ago down in the grizzly unit (not to sure if thats the right GMU) was the last grizzly shot ever in Oregon.

I saw a picture taken in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of a Grizzly. It was snapped by a Bow Hunter with an Elk Tag. This was in the early 90's.

About 15 years ago we were hunting the Snake River Unit and deciced to drive to Halfway a small little town along the Snake River just south of the Pine Creek Unit. We went into the grocery store for grub for camp and noticed a picture of a guy with a bear on the BB. Asked the clerk about it and was told it was a local who shot this grizz not far from town. Couldn't believe it but that was the story. It sure as heck was a picture of a guy with a dead grizzly. On the second trip at the end of the season I told my partner that trip about it and we drove into the town for a good meal and to show him the picture. No picture, the clerk said the ODFW guy from Enterprize had taken it and that they were told to keep it quite.....
I don't know if we were having our leg pulled or not. Does anyone remember a story like that? We were told it made the local paper in Wallawa county.

I don't think there are any grizzly bears left in Oregon. There are quite a few blond phase and other light-colored Black bears in Hells Canyon area - they can look a lot like grizzlies.

Washington still has a few grizzlies but they are up near the Canadian border and many miles from Oregon.

It would be tough for the animals to get through Wa into Oregon.....but not from Idaho, the same way the wolves have come. I would not be the least surprised to hear of a verified grizzly in Central Idaho. It's not that far to the populations in Montana. And if they can get there, you can bet they can get into NE Oregon easy enough.

So, what would happen if you were to shoot a bear, during a valid bear season, with a valid bear tag, that turned out to be a grizzly??   They don't exist in Oregon, right??

Ok, Birdhunter, you must have some scoop on this one!!

sorry Rogue I didn't see your post. The other thing is moose have came down from Washington and I believe they have also crossed the river . A big game biologist was asking me if I had heard of any sightings around duck lake a couple of years ago.

Rogue - The regs. say:

BAG LIMIT: One black bear per tag.

Grizzlies apparently have no open season in Oregon - similar to moose. Oregon occasionally gets a moose that swims over from Idaho but you can't shoot them legally even though they sort of look like elk.

A moose swam the Columbia just last year and dissapeared up into the Entiat. That was seen by quite a few people. These critters do wander some time.

Default Grizzlies in Oregon

My brother just told me he had a friend who was hunting the late cow elk hunt in the Ukiah unit and a fish and game guy told him he was tracking a grizzly. There was no sighting just tracks in the snow and by the track it was a grizzly. Not sure what to believe? he also said that there are wolves also in Ukiah and they know they are there. I think if a grizzly was in Oregon there would be more media attention. What do you guys think?
