Tell me about surf fishing

I have recently acquired some really decent long-casting surf equipment. Is there anyting to catch besides perch? Don't get me wrong, I love the perch, but, with a good cast and a variation in bait, can a guy pick up salmon, or some other good edible fish?

I havent caught a salmon in the surf but I have caught some from the jetty at Barview Jetty.

I've caught a few (2) coho surf fishing for perch. Both were in late summer and in Seaside. Dumb luck for me, really dumb luck for 2 coho! Jetty fishing seems to have more variety and be more productive for me. Rugged and remote are even better.
