We got drawn for the Sumpter Unit!

My hunting party and I got drawn for our first choice rifle deer hunt in the Sumpter unit. I don't think I've ever hunted that unit before, but I have a friend who lives over there who says he can show us some good hunting there. Anyone hunt the Sumpter unit, and do you have any tips for the unit? We only had one preference point, so I feel pretty lucky that we got drawn!

Congrats to you. Sumpter is a decent unit for eastern. There are more average than dandy bucks but a few big ones if you get lucky. Go to the store in Unity and check out the wall hangers in there. You'll be drooling.

I have drawn the same tag this year and am going scouting in early July. There is two different types of country. Some is big timber with large draws and canyons and thick timber or you go South for transitioning into sage and desert land. The Southern area's have alot of private land you would need permission which is very hard to get. Dark Canyon off of the Burnt River is a good place to start. If you are near the Burnt River it is pretty cool to drive it in the afternoon just to see all of the Big Horns. There are alot of them and they are pretty calm that time of year. Good Luck.

WE have hunted the Sumpter unit since the 70s and yes there are some large bucks. Look for Mormon Basin on the map as most of our large bucks have come from there. We are hunting washington this year as we do every other year as it usually takes a point to get sumpter. PM me for other info
