Default Second Season Elk Results

Well, I have to start by saying that I was skunked this year in the Trask unit. There was sign every where and I was led in circles two days in a row by a bunch of Elk, but was never close enough to get a shot off. I did see a lot of great country and lots of Deer. I may have to head back up there for Deer season next year, but then I am sure that I will see lots of elk then. I saw a nice Black Bear and a Cougar and did lots of hiking up and down the hills. It is really nice country over there. Thanks go to the folks at CC Filson for their outstanding products. I was warm and dry on the days that it rained so hard.

Did any one have any luck up there. I heard a few shots, but did not see any animals hanging.

Two days of hunting the trask and wilson, all I had to show for it was a bunch of very wet wool on Saturday. Actually, 3 of us for all of Saturday (Stimson) and half of Sunday (Belding) never saw an Elk, but like you a few bucks. It was somewhat short notice so we didn't have any good reconnasence(sp?). We did see lots of sign and heard a few shots close. Talked to the guard at Stimson on the way out Sat. and he'd seen a couple cows and a buck on various tags come out, but no bulls.

You're not alone!

SureSet, are you talking about Belding Point in the Salmonberry? I hunted that without seeing sign this year.

Yes, I think we're talking about the same place. We hunted just above the river crossing, on the north side. Sunday was a short day for us, I think we were basically toasted from the Saturday soaking! We didn't run into any herd sign down there, just a nice blacktail buck that thought about challenging my buddy before he got smart...

Hunted up by Shields and Salmonberry, saw lots of fresh sign but not a peep out of an elk. Did not work as hard as I normanlly do, but at times it was just too wet. Did not even hear a shot where I was. Hunting over in Washington next year I think?

One of my buddies had a second season tag and we went out scouting tuesday evening around Waldport. Found one cow and some sign so came back on Wednesday to look around. Got into elk first thing in the morning, but no antlers. Did plenty of hiking around through the brush. Saw plenty of sign and heard a few shots, but no bulls for us. Not that the weather really helped. This was that day last week where it was clear and 60 on the coast. Pretty crazy for a mid-november coast hunt. I think first season would have been a lot better. Drier for sure, but these elk had been pressured a lot. All the bands we got into were only 2 or 3 strong. No big herds and lots of singles. I hunt this area a lot for grouse and this was the first trip I hadn't seen a bull. File it all away and try again next year.

Both the Bear and the Cougar were around Steinberg ridge, near Barney Lake. The Cougar was moving through the woods on the east side of the ridge about halve way down to the lake. The Bear was on the west side of the ridge. He was at the bottom of the cut area down hill from the helicopter landing at the end of Steinberg ridge Road. There was also some bear traks up near the North Fork of the Trak river above Barney Lake.

Good luck. I would love a steak off the bear! E-Mail me if you want. I can show you on a map if you would like.

What part did you hunt? I am wondering if you hunt it the same way that we do...
