Newport report - Wed 6-15
Not much to report from our boat. Got out about 7:30 after the CG opened the bar back up. It had been restricted to 22' and under, and usually if it's like that I'm not interested - even though I could legally go since I have a 23 footer. When they opened it up we went across with no problemo so I don't know what was going on, but I figured something was up and I was more than willing to wait. (Thanks again, CG, for making sure we have safe passage when we venture forth)
Outside it was flat and smooth, just like the prediction.
We headed up toward the lighthouse and put down the trolling gear, a purple haze hootchie at about 100', a sunrise at probably 30, and a blue and silver coyote spoon up near the surface. Nada. We would occasionally mark fish, but they had no interest in our offering.
Talked to Netscape, also fishing off the lighthouse, right after he had done battle with a skate. He said it got 'em buzzed 'til they saw what they had. I think he reported that he finished with a halibut and a 37" nook. Way to go!
We decided to bag it and head up to Depoe and get in line with the commercials working up there, and besides, it was a nice easy run up.
But we had the same luck up there. Nothing. Not even a drive-by. We watched one troller land a fish, and that was all we saw all day. I'm sure others were having success since there was quite a few of them working back and forth.
We finally gave up and tried to put some rockies in the boat, but the drift was scooting us right along. I had to back into it over the structure and with three total newbies on board managed to lose quite a bit of gear. Finally headed in about 2pm because they had a little drive ahead of them - to Seattle!
Nice day on the tub though. It was one of those days when you can go in any direction comfortably instead of having to think about swell direction and wind waves. All we needed was fish.

Re: Newport report - Wed 6-15
Hey Skein,
Drummerboy (that's me) and Tunaboy were out with Netscape yesterday. My first time as a boat-ho. We ended up with one small-but-keepable halibut, a 7lb ling, Tunaboy's dandy nook, and a half dozen or so blacks. It did get pretty bumpy on the way back in.
Thought the Newport Meet'n Greet wen fine. It was good to see some guys I only knew by ifish name.

Thanks to Skip "Netscape", Salty Captain ...King of the Skates ., nice hooking up with you again. I never get tired of those hot Sandab bites with other fish mixed in ....We caught the conditions right again.
Nice fishing with you to "Drummerboy" and thanks for that Squirrely tail that smacked the bass. It will go in my Fishbox hall of fame ....

Re: Newport report - Wed 6-15
Good fishing with you "Dogs". Did have a bunch of laughs out there. Think I'm going to make a 1" plug cutter for imatation scallops if I keep on bringing up those skates(Salty Walty taught me well). Still wondering what kind of shark that was that I caught with those 2 skates. Wasn't my day to nail the butts.
Man that was a long day, but a nice one except for that rough ride back from the seal rock area.

I was there also, and about the same results. It must have been Netscape in the Thunderjet, as when he came by, he asked us what to do with the skate (we were gentelmen) and told him "nothing". n He was marking fish about 165 in 180 water. They started mooching and we drifted off.
We trolled deep, shallow, and inbetween using whole herring and we did have one drive by, bit it was very slow.
I thought I saw a Ed Wing heading toward Depoe Bay, you were about a mile inside of us.
Reports are that there are good Coho numbers, so this weekend should get some blood in the boat.
Nest time I will try and say Hi.

Re: Newport report - Wed 6-15
Nice meeting all you folks at Izzy's on Tues. I had a great time! I finally got to put some faces to some names. It was interesting that everyone left after Eric's cell phone rang (x10). Something about an extreme low tide at 9:10pm and picking razor clams on the beach???
Anyway, nice to meet ya Skein, Netscape, Tunaboy, Coastal Fisherman, Salty Walty, I forgot Eric's handle, Diver Down, DJ, and Tom (I forgot his handle as well). I probalbly missed a few. Hope to see ya out there!
