South Cascade Elk Muzzleloader Hunt...
Well with the exception of the elk being extremely uncooperative, it was a great hunt.
The hunt ran from Nov 9-15 and is a hair tag. This is our 4 time with this tag and we have had good success, if not at least lots of opportunity in the past. Usually we are hunting the herds dropping down out of the wilderness just SW of Crater Lake NP. We saw exactly 6 tracks in the fresh snow over the week. One of the guys in our party took a poke at a spike at 60 yards and missed. That was it. The one big difference this year is that there is usually a couple decent snow storms prior to the season. This year the first storm started the night before the opener. Our only conclusion was that the elk we still holed up in the high country waiting for the next storm to hit to push them down. Of all the hunters we saw and/or talked to, our friend was the only one who had shot at or even seen an elk.
The last time we had this tag we had saw almost 100 elk over the week ranging from herds of 20 to the random pair and odd lone bull.
Oh well it was a fun week and now it is time to fill my WA deer tag. 6 weeks, any deer here in the Battle Ground Unit. Not a bad deal.
