Default Dog boot advice needed

I want to get a set of protective dog boots for my lab. I'm looking for advice by people who own and use them. If you use them what brands/style/material do you recomend? Are there any considerations regarding material/wear and tear/comfort etc.

My dog does double duty as a retriever and flusher, but the main reason I want the boots is that off season water training has become hazardous due to broken glass. Thanks

I tried several differant brands and styles of dog boots . Poor results with all. I just gave up on the idea. The first pair were leather and they came off in the first 15 minutes. Then Avery brand. Hard time getting them on and when I did, they irritated the dog to the point he would not walk. Tried differant sizes with same results. Tried one other higher style boot and got them to stay on , but they had wear holes in one day while hunting Chukar.
Thats been my experiences. Good luck. Hope this helps.

I'll second that. Nothing has worked yet beyond half a day in the rims.

I've wrapped the foot lightly in gauze then added duct tape. That works well. . .or as well as you could expect. Funny to watch the dogs high-step for the first five minutes or so!

Is there a spray on "pad toughener" out there to use?

It seems there IS a "Tough Foot" spray/paint-on pad conditioner.

I've seen it advertised before...just don't remember where.

I have used Lewis Dog Boots on my GSP. They work pretty good and I have hunted my dog for hours without any problems. One key to using them was to shave the hair short where the boots would tape on. Then apply some of the white first aid type tape to the dogs leg as a base. Next put the boots on applying tape over the boots anchoring it to the tape applied earlier. The Lewis Dog Boots are sized to your dogs feet and have drain holes. Hunting the burned rice stubble in central CA my dog encountered no problems with these on. Now the cuts on his ears was a different problem. :depressed: :depressed:

MY dog HATED anything I put on him and so the boots appeared to not fit/stay on at all.

Talked to a trainer friend of mine and he told me to try:
Off Season
Put 1 boot on the dog and walk the dog distracting him from the boot
After he is comfortable with 1 do the same to the second foot... continue untill he is fine with his new shoes.

Now its just part of the huntin game for him and they work great.
Now he gets all excited when his huntin shoes come out because he knows its time to work!

Last time out my Lab got a little "ouchy". I tried some "New Skin" or "Tuff Skin", which is a liquid bandage that you can purchase in any super market or drugstore that has a good first aid section. She did not like the smell at all (kinda like Banana)and you have to let it dry for a minute or two and keep the dog from licking it while it is drying!

Once it dried she did not try to bother it. The only draw back is it will sting if applied on an open spot. trust me I know as I have used it for years on foot blisters that have opened ect.

I applied a coat before going out in the morning, another after returning and one before hit'n the sack.

It seems like a lot of trouble, but it really seemed to help her.

Good break-in strategy. What kind of boots do you use (Lewis Boots) and are you hunting chukar?

Where did you guys find the spray pad tougher at? I serched the net? I don't hunt with my Weims but we do a lot of hiking and last year on a trip though 3 Sisters and the lava fields I had to use boots on my dog. They lasted almost for a while until we got though that section of trail about 4 miles and then she kicked them off again. We have tried 3 different brands for snowshoeing and could not keep them on very long. We end up losing one shoe out of every set we try.

It is hard to get a boot to fit their feet I think becasue of the shape of foot. Weims have web toes and a long foot. I would like to try to pad spray because after a day of scouting and hiking in the coast range on closed roads they get a little tender from the gravel.

I found this product called tough foot but it appear to be more of a balm product for sore feet? Than a protective coating?

Western Pet supply has a product called pad heal that is kind of like a balm. I used it a couple times on my labs with pretty good results. Same issues with the smell, but it did work. Tuff foot seemed ok to, but more difficult to apply. Both work as healers as well as tougheners. You just have to keep applying it and it toughens up the pads over time. Cabelas sells the tuf-foot.
