Eastern Oregon Pigs
I am hearing that ranchers have been having a pig problem, and there is no tag requirement or limit on pigs over there.
I was hoping someone could direct me in the right direction on where I might be able to harvest a few of these "problem animals"...thanx

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
I've got a friend who got two of them, and he said he will take me over there. I can't say where without checking with him first. He got a sow and a shoat. We had some of the sow and it was pretty good eating, unsmoked and uncured, just cooked up. He said he was having the shoat prepped for roasting whole.
He also said he saw a large boar during his hunt, but didn't get a shot. He made no guess as to what it might taste like, but said it would be an awesome trophy. When I go I'll double-check and see if I can tell the spot. Evidently the ranchers really want them outta there!

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
Pigs are considered feral livestock and are under the jurisdiction of the State Ag. Dept. You could check with Ag. in Salem or maybe contact county extension agents in areas you're interested in. I'm not sure if its legal to shoot them wherever they happen to be found - check with ODFW district offices for more info.

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
Don't eat the boar. Although if you are the one doing the cooking you probably won't eat it anyway. We cooked up some of the first boar that I ever shot and while cooking it, it smelled like urine. The smell was in the house for days, lucky I was single back then. I am not sure if it tasted like it or not, I couldn't get past the smell. We even field dressed the boar within 30 minutes after killing it. WE only shot them for the trophy value and to get rid of them after that. If anyone hears of places to go, please let me know. Hogs are fun to hunt, no offense Hogmaster, I've seen what you do to nets!?!?

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
I recall some discussion a while back about feral pigs in the Paulina area...check with ODFW in Bend...541-388-6363.
I also think that while they may or may not be managed by Ag, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission has given the green light to hunting...

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
Here's what the big game regulations have to say:
Feral Swine
"Feral swine, as defined by Oregon Department of Agriculture (OAR 603-010-0055), are now a 'predatory animal.' It is legal to hunt feral swine on public land with a general hunting license. Hunting feral swine on private land does not require a general hunting license, but you must first gain landowner permission. All general hunting regulations must be followed."
The regs go on to define predatory animals as "coyotes, rabbits, rodents, and feral swine which are or may be destructive to agricultural crops."
I suspect a call to an ODFW office or an extension agent would give you information on where to hunt and who to contact for permission.

Re: Eastern Oregon Pigs
I wonder if something's changed here...about 2-3 years ago they took a call-in hunting list that filled up really quick. I was on the wait list but never got a call that I'm aware of.
