Re: L & C tomorrow?
Kaus,
I hate to be a doom and gloom type of guy, but 70mph gusts are alot of wind!!
First question, have you ever had you're boat on a body of water with 70mph gusts, let alone 30mph winds sustained? If you don't know you're boat's ability in this weather, stay home, or at least land bound.
I was thinking to myself, what a great day to slay ducks tommorow, but decided to do other activities, especially with the forecasted winds.
In 6' of water (Like in many of the channels down there) 70mph, or even 30mph, can whip up big 3-4' swells easy.
From my experience windsurfing, 40mph will kick up up 8' swells below hood river at spring creek fish hatchery on a westerly pushing against river flow in about 20' of water. Now you see why I changed my mind this weekend.
If anyone decides to brave it. Don't be afraid to wait it out or get out early if it looks iffy. The water's starting to dip into the 40's now and hypothermia will set in quickly at those wind speeds. BE SAFE, AND KNOW YOU'RE BOATS LIMITS!!!!!! DO NOT RISK YOU'RE LIFE IF IT LOOKS IFFY.
I had to rescue three guys that swamped a john boat on new year's day about 5 years ago. They went down at 3:30am trying to get their spot in conditions that were too much for the boat they were in. We found them at 4:30 by chance, and I honestly think if we would have found them any later, they would have died.
BE SAFE! the season is early yet. Err on the side of caution down there this weekend. Especially saturday!
