Default 300 WSM

Has anyone on this board ever shot a 300 Winchester Short Magnum? I am interested in this rifle, but have read the recoil is 35.5 foot pounds, which is about 15 over the recoil of a 300 Magnum, 180 grain. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

one of the hunters in our elk party had one this year I shot it at the range and it seemed like a real nice gun I didn't think it kicked that hard but then i love my 338 win mag. no pain no gain

I have a Browning Stainless Stalker in 300WSM. It weighs 6.5lbs and is the most accurate, best shooting gun I have ever owned. (I have 16 different caliber long guns.) I have shot 150g and 180g rounds out of it and really didn't notice any extreme recoil.
Upon initial sight in I fired 40+ rounds without any discomfort. Get the rifle you will definitely love it. I believe it is the best, most useful caliber that is made. Let me know if you want more information.

Joru-
I have a browning 300wsm. Recoil is more of a hard shove than a slam. Seems no wosre than your average a 30.06. As far as acuracy goes it seems to be exceptional. From my bench with factory 180g ammo I have managed sub minute groups at 100yrds and my best group at 200 yards on a day I was "in the zone" has been 1.25".

I mainly picked this over the 300 win mag because I felt it would be better for reloading. I also have always felt more comfortable with a shorter rifle. 300 and 338 size rifles and the barrel lengths they require have always felt ungainly to me and unbalanced. I have heard several sources say if you own a 300 and are happy with it there is no reason to change to the WSM but if you are buying your first 30 cal mag class rifle it should be close to the top of your list.

The proof will be next week I guess when/if get a bull with it.

If you are concerned about recoil do what I did to my 300UM. Have a good muzzle brake installed it is lessthan $200.00 and it will reduce recoil by 40%. I now love to shoot the gun. I can shoot boxes of shells now where before after about 5 shoots I could not hit anything because I was anticipating the recoil. One other thing to remember is that the heavier a gun the lighter the recoil so the light short mags are going to kick harder then a heavier gun. Here agian the muzzle brake will fix it. The only draw back is the added 1.75" in barrel length.
