Well I was taking a couple of guys from Kansas elk hunting here for Roosevelts and I admitt I was feeling the pressure a little to get them a bull. In return they're going to take me and a buddy whitetail and pheasent hunting next year. One of the guys had never killed an elk and was his lifetime dream, the other had never got a roosevelt.
I had two nice bulls spotted up to the day before the season when this guy kept driving his wheeler up and down the clearcut. We didn't see them the night before or opening morning. This guy was up there at 3 am to get there before us. I was peeved he drove in there for one, then he was smoking with the wind at his back. Some people just don't understand. Anyhow, the elk were not there come light. We checked in all day and decided to park our wheeler in the road at the beginning of the road up there so he would know we were there and maybe not drive up. Well he turned around that night instead. Right at dark I noticed four elk coming out of the timber with two bulls in the lead at around 150 yards from us. I told him the biggest bull was in the lead and to shoot when he's ready. He took forever it seemed and then told me he couldn't see through his scope??? As it turns out with all the wet stuff coming down some got on his lenses and when he was breathing so hard it fogged them up. Coulnd't believe it so we let them go last night. Went back in the morning about 3:45 am to make sure we were the first ones and got drenched well before daylight. But once light was beginning to show we could make out around 20 magot looking figures moving below us. I was on one ridge with one guy and my buddy was on the other one about 200 yards away. The big bull wouldn't give us a clean shot and then BOOOOMMMM! The other guy shot, then the guy with me finally saw it and shot, then the other guy shot and dropped it. So one down, I looked for the other bull but he was standing in the middle of all the cows. We let them walk 200 yards from us right in the middle and never got a shot. This is the second time this year a bull has survived from keeping with the ladies when I'm around. The guy wanted to try but I refused. I just had invisions of him nailing one of those cows. Anyhow, now the heat is on for them to show me a few whitetails!! I'll post some pics when they're developed.
