Electronic Dog Collars

I am getting ready to buy an electonic collar for my GSP. Been looking at the Innotek ADV-1000 Trainer. Anyone have any experience with these or a preference on collars?

I have an older/lower grade model for my GSP. Innotek has been awesome to deal with. You'll be happy. Let's just say my dog can be a little overly 'focused' at times it seems to make his hearing goe bad. The collar improves his hearing tremendously.

I bought mine at Western Pet Supply in SW Portland. I can't recommend them enough. They are very knowledgeable and true pet people.

I have trained 8 dogs in my life from Springers to Labs and never used a shock collar. It just takes time and love to train, but then if you do not have either collar is the only way.

Ad11 is right, however I was one with little time and the collars definately help speed certain things up. I have the Cabelas model that is made for 2 dogs/1 remote, 3/4 mile range. They work great.

In regards to Western Pet Supply, they are great. I bought my collars online but I purchase almost everything else from them.

I use a Bark collar with the battery out when I am hunting him. He knows what the thing poking him in the neck is and doesn�t need me to correct him to often when it�s on. My dog is a High-Power Duck retrieving machine bred for the big show. I couldn�t imagine training a dog like him with out a little help from an e-collar. Buy the way what�s a GSP ?

Thanks for all the info! My GSP is just over a year old. I was hoping not to have to get a collar. Last weekend I shot at and missed a chukar that took off for the next county. Mickey (the GSP) took off after the bird. She totally ignored me for about 200 yards. I think the only reason she came back then was because she lost the bird. She is only a year and a month old but I need to get that problem cured. Two weeks ago she was out hunting and minded like pro. She whoa'd and came when called.

I wouldn't suggest using an E-collar for just a few days. You need to start with conditioning them to it, by using a very low button. It takes more than a few days to do it correctly. I would suggest meeting up with a seasoned person or read a couple of books. You can do more damage using them incorrectly in a hurry. NEVER use a collar as punishment and never use a collar until the dog has the command down solid. It is but one more tool, not a cure. I'll say it again, never use a collar until the dog has the command solid !

Dogtra is gaining in popularity.

Dogs should go through a stage of training called "collar conditioning". This training teaches the dog how to turn off the stimulation. The collar should not be used as a punishment tool. This is where most eggheads screw their dog up. Know what you are doing or consult a pro. E-collars when used in conjunction with knowledge can train a dog to levels unheard of just 10 years ago.

I have a working dog and use the tri-tronics pro 100. Its rechargable, waterproof and easy to use. Get the short ant. with the transmitter if you get one. It was what I needed to re-focus the dog back to where I wanted him and remove the conflict between us. He was 3 when I first started working the E-Collar. Its not a form of punishment, but can be if you do not know what you are doing. If used incorrectly, you can mess up a good dog.
there should be several videos out there, and if you do get one and would like some quick help, give me a call or drop me an e mail.
The level of electicity used should be just enough to divide the dogs attention (almost annoy) and should be used steadly until the dogs behavior is modified.
If you call your dog to you: You give the command and the light eletricity at the same time, until the dog arrives at your side in a seated position, then the juice goes off and there is some serious praise. Make the dog feel like he just did the coolest thing in the world. These are great tools if used right, but used wrong and they can become evil....... Its not a tool you put on the dog one night and go hunting the next morning with it.

I agree with everything you guys are saying. I will go back to the basics with the dog and see if I can avoid using a collar. More yard work! Now that I think about it I have been kind of lax on the yard work since hunting season began. Thanks for all your advice!

TJB, it's not that you shouldn't use a collar. It's , I say with all kindness, please learn the in's and out's of them. They are a great tool and with compassion, as in all training, you and the dog can make huge leaps using one but you must know how to you it before you can effectively train with it. I once saw a fellow litterly fry his dog, the dog was screaming in pain because he didn't sit when asked. This is abuse, plan and simple. The dog MUST understand what you want at all levels or you must back up and repeat something he does know and is solid on then move ahead again.
It's basic dog training, they must understand what you want first. If you miss the bird and tell him, ' no bird' and he takes off and won't come. If under normal situations he understands what ' here or come ' means and responds, then this may be a place where a tickle from a collar could really help. It's not a fry the darn dog, it's a tickle. You only use enough strength in any situation to have the dog respond. It's only basic dog training. You wouldn't get in a dogs face, lifting by the cheeks, for licking you. Only used when a major infraction happens, like snapping with teeth. Same with a collar, used with compassion and not anger, they are a great tool.

TJB ....... there are some good videos out there for training your dog with e-collars.. One is Delmar Smith (I think) It's late and I'm old --- another one is by a guy that sells dog training equipment (brain cramp!!) He was at the Seattle outdoor show last 2 years ------ help me out guys.........their videos are very helpfull......I did two GWP's with their info, both turned out great.......

Boedy, my dogs are the same way now. If they start to misbehave I can simply throw a collar on them and they change their attitude without me even having to turn them on. My collars also beep so I can press the "1" setting and all it really does is just beep and that seems to be enough for them to shape up now.

TJB...Go to website working-retriever.com and look at the classified adds for retriever equipment. There you will find quality used collars for sale along with collar conditioning videos. The best out now in Mike Lardy's collar conditioning. I have been training labs for almost 10 yrs now and have been doing hunts test for 7yrs. This website is the best website regarding training retrievers around. If I can be of more help, let me know. By the way I have used Tri-tronics and currently use a pro500 two dog unit. Dogtra is becoming more popular amongst trialers. HT

Tilla...yeah I breed too. Just bred my MH with FC/AFC Teddy's Ebonstar James and got only two puppies. First was so big that she couldn't push it out. By the time I pulled her out she was expired. Got nice dark yellow female to show for the effort. HT :depressed:

HT, we need to do a Sauvie hunt, get CR and go do it. I've been trying to get him out and off his couch for weeks now. Heard he was going east after elk this weekend. How about one of the following weekends we get out ?

Having field trialed(one FC) and bred GSP's
and have labs too there is a world of difference in training and using an e- collar between the two.Del Mar Smith and probably Tr-tronics videos for pointers(also recommend the NAHVDA book) Lardy,Tr-tronics, etc for labs.As has been said by others,don't borrow a collar to see if it works,get with a program of development and collar conditioning.By the way what's a Tilla? :grin:
