ochocco help?????
I have a cow tag for the ochocco unit and I am going to do some scouting this weekend. I have only been over in that area a few times in the past. Does anyone have any helpful knowledge in that unit? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: ochocco help?????
I was over there a month and a half ago and saw 1 lone cow elk just north of the Rager Ranger station (not worth looking for at this point).
However, you should do a search on this board, and look at some of BOE's posts. He's really experienced with that unit for elk.

Re: ochocco help?????
OK I'll go ahead and say it, Spanish Peak and the areas in the northeastern side hold quite a bit of elk. A lot of hunters also. I used to hunt it until I couldn't stand it anymore with the people so I'm not afraid of giving some info. You know it's getting bad these days when people are holding out info on cow hunts!? , just a joke; Anyhow, find some good cat roads to walk and pray for snow.

For 30-35 years, the headwaters of Deep Creek "has been veddy, veddy good to me".

Re: ochocco help?????
We are also going to be in the Ochocco's for the cow hunt. 6 members in our party. I wish I could give you some details on where to go but I WOULD GET SHOT!!
The biggest thing I can think of is wish for a LITTLE snow on the ground. If there is a little fresh snow it will be easy to find where the animals are. If you go back and do a search you will find alot of info on past hunts for the area. It is a big area but there are elk in most of it.
Good luck with your hunt!
Jon

Re: ochocco help?????
moman...... We were cow hunting 2 years ago and my Grandfather had 5 MATURE bulls just walk around him feeding within 20 or 30 yards. The smallest bull was a big 5x5. There wasnt a single cow with them. They just walked off over the hill never even spooked. Its like the animals know what tag is in your pocket!

Re: ochocco help?????
Derek, you may want to search the archives, I posted some info from my first season bull hunt that might interest you. I have USGS topos of the entire Spanish Peak/Wolf Ridge area. I'd be happy to share them with you if you're up this way. I saw lots of cows, of course, I had a bull tag, you know the story....

Re: ochocco help?????
Well It wasnt near as good as it has been for us but it could have been worse. We only got 1 cow and only saw 3 elk between 6 people. The cow we got, a calf and a spike. Im not sure if the elk hadnt got into the area yet or if they had already moved on but they just werent where they usually are. I will try and post a couple pics later on.
How was the hunt for others? We saw 3 or 4 other elk hanging and that was it.

Re: ochocco help?????
Well I was there on opening weekend and the only thing we could find was wallhanger bucks. We got to within 50 yards of 4 huge bucks. We walked up on one cow that someone else already shot. Then this last sat. I made the trip back over there and spotted about 15 cows just inside the tree line on the other side of a clearing. I got real close but I could not get off a shot. I stalked them into the timber but I just could not get off a good shot. I just kept telling myself to just wait and i would get the chance but either there would be a tree in the way or they would jog off. They would separate and be all around me, just outside of vision through the timber and they were calling to each other....oh well very exciting, definitely worth the 4 mi walk to get there.
