Default Bank Access for Estuary Sturgeon

Ok Is there any place a person could go and fish off the bank for Gators down by Astoria. I was looking at Tongue point and it looks to be a wildlife preserve so I might be able to hike it down in there but it looks like it is rough. What about in Astoria I would prefer to stay off the docks due to having to haul the fish up and then toss them down into the water. that gives me flashbacks of them tossing gators off the wall on OC sick Belly flops and floating fish. Any help would be great appreciated. Rp

If you've got a WA. license I've seen people fishing from shore just above the Astoria bridge on the WA. side, it looked to be a "long rod" show like up at Bradford IS.

You can fish off the beach in Fort Stevens state park. Guys actually drive their rigs right down on the sand and fish from the beach for sturgeon, perch, and salmon. I haven't done it, but I've seen the people fishing there. If you stop at the office in the park they will tell you how to get there.

I would be interested in fishing off the beach at fort stevens. I know where it is as I have fished for salmon there. (never caught 0ne)

Has anyone actually caught sturgeon off that beach? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I will be in that area on Saturday. Will walk the beach and report back what I find.

Ft. Steven ... aka Social Security Beach.

Too early for Salmon.

Perch .. go to the ocean beach.

Sturgeon ... a guy can hook them .. slow and the crabs will eat you up.

couple of places on Astoria you can fish for Gators but it violates your need to stay off the docks.

Blue Pig please tell me about the docks. Where in Astoria? How do you return shakers to the water? How much of a drop is it? Do you think you could let them down with a rope and then shake it loose to let the fish swim away?

And Could you fish for crab with a crab snare on my strugeon poles from SS beach. Do you think this would be productive?

Thank you

Two years ago we fished Fort stevens and would catch half a dozen keepers there. I used about half a dozen sand shrimp and wrappped them in netting so even if the crabs get them, you still had bait. If you catch the tide you should do alright.

You can crab right off SS beach out of a boat, so it should work from shore. Look for the current, crabs ride it.

Hey Matt,

Where is social security beach? I tried looking at the Fort Stevens web site and it doesn't show anything.

Thanks for your help.

Another good place is in hamond at the marina.Drive down to the parking lot were you look over the river just down river of the marina. Walk down the dike below the pilings. A friend caught a few keepers there and one oversize last year.

Social Sec. beach is the nick name (old timers fish it mainly.. hence the name), Its the beach that runs from the south jetty on the north side to tressell bay in ft. steven.
