The early pay for two pheasants at Sauvie is over. I would recommend going duck hunting in the afternoon and let your springer pickup wounded ducks and pheasant for you. Most duck hunters have been pulling out early so far this year except for me and two hustlin rookies. Love watching them and their dogs chase cripples I shot, wading chest deep in mud. Their dogs also picked up cripples on the ground pretty easy. Used their nose to track down. The dogs were both rookie's too so it was quite fun to watch.
I would take about six decoys, get a blind, time your shots for the cripples to hit land. You can get the ones in the water and your pointer can get the ones on land. You can't roam and hunt there but you have to walk out to get there and back. Your blind area is pretty large so your dog can roam a little. Has to be on leash untill you get too the blind though.

See you out there when the weather is right (won't be long now).

Hey crabbait,
The weather is coming and I have been going quite a bit during the week to East and west side. Went with the two rookies and enjoyed having a cup of coffee while they were chasing their dog and birds. We hung in and got ten. Big mallards. They were flaring on robo so turned it off. Don't you love it when you shoot and the other two guys say I sure got that one. I told them it didn't matter because they could both say they shot all ten. Anyway as it turns out my daughter comes by and says heard you got two ducks dad. I shot seven of the ten and they were going to split them up. When I just took two nice mallards and said they could have the rest, that's how I only got two.

1Pump,
Yes I have hunted Mud Hen on the East side before. That's where 80% of the kill is coming from. Plenty of water but tons of blinds and competition. The rookie's have been going to some units on the East side where they are the only ones. They have been averaging 3 birds a piece and don't have a clue. I overslept yesterday morning and the wife wakes up and says I thought you were going hunting? I said yes I am but it's too late now. She says why not the afternoon hunt then. I said ok then and took off. Could not decide East side or West side when I came to that turn in the road. Headed to West side because I am more comfortable there and know most the blinds. Looked on the board and everything was available except mud 4. I took mud #1, the guys that were there earlier got 4 out of it. As I was pulling out my cart and decoys I noticed I had no waders. I went anyway with just my jeans and tennis shoes. Was doing pretty good throwing my decoys out without having to go in yet. 5 of the deeks were upside down . The water was just a bit cool but warmer than the ocean. Sat there for 4 hours soaking wet and slipping around like I was on ice. I missed to Scaup. Did not see much flying around except Geese. Fun picking up deeks and humping out soaking wet. Nobody but a jarhead would do that.
