Default manitoba walleye/northerns

Looking for information and tips on how to catch fish north of the border. My dad and I will be spending a week fishing for fish neither of us has targeted before.

My suggestion....
Ask your guide/lodge staff. Although you may get lots of info here, it won't even compare to what info you'd get from local fisherman. I would search for fishing forums local to that region of Canada and ask for specifics about the body of water you plan to fish.

For example what they use (and how) on the Great Lakes might differ greatly from what they do/use on that body of water in Manitoba. Personally I couldn't imagine why the good'ol worm harness wouldn't catch anywhere, but I also know they like pulling cranks a lot up there too. They get pretty sifisticated (sp) with their side planers and all.

I've even seen them bobber fish rivers for eyes just like we bobber fish for steelhead/salmon. The bait and rig is differant of course, but the idea is still the same. Fish the seam line between fast & slow eddys and put it in their face and they'll bite. I think modifying the steelhead jig/bobber jig from a Maribou jig to a chartruse jig with night crawler and stinger hook.... they'd HAVE to bite it!

pike= spoons-- red and white, red and silver, sucker minnows and big bobbers

walley-- jig and leech, vertical jigging (colors, pink, chartouse, brass)
fast troll or crank baits-- watch the bug hatch. If the may flies have hatched, you'll be fishing like a king.. if they havn't.. expect lots of mosquittoes and pike

for those bent on dragging worms-- I just dont like to use them early in the year.. water is too cold and they don't do much.. Brass

Jigs tipped with minnows around structure will catch both as will shad raps trolled. Catching pike won't be a problem.
