Default Jackson county

I'm heading down this weekend to finish out the season down there. Anybody been out and willing to tell about it? email me. I usually hunt around Lake Creek, Salt Creek and Butte Falls.

I would say the Bute Falls area or south west of Fish Lake.

shhh...nerta you don't have to tell, F&H lies has done several articles on much of that area. But we all know that it is just LIES.

Rich another area to check out is the Evans Creek unit. It is not real heavily hunted, but has some good access to BLM and timber land. My advice is to get as far away from Medford or Ashland as you can, and don't go above about 3500-4000 feet. The bucks should be just under that elevation with many down toward 2000 and some all the way down to the valley floors. Look for fir thickets just inside the timber, adjacent to clear cuts and you should find lots of sign and even a few rubs on on 1-2" firs. (Its not hard to find the rubs they are everywhere the deer are and if you find a fir thicket, I will bet you $$$ there is at least a small rub in it.)

Good luck.

I talked to my maniacal hunting buddy last night, he's spending the rest of the season down at his brother's house in Grants Pass. Since I spent a summer working out in the poison oak down in the Ruch area on the Applegate, I had lots of places for him to check out the last few years.

Normally, they see lots of animals at all elevations. As of last night, they'd seen a total of 4 deer in the "normal" places. They've found most all of the animals down low, tight around water. I'm sure some of the big boys are still up high in the brush, but, hey, if there's no water for a LONG ways, there probably aren't going to be any deer, either.

Very few of the small bucks they've seen or heard about have shown much sign of rutting up, either.

All of the places discussed here previously would be good bets with the opp. of finding a "big en".

Don't discount the Elk Creek Drainage... I have several buddies that have done very well hunting the stands of unburned timber as well as the parimeters of these areas.

The Big Boys are still up high on top and the ususal migration has not really taken off so I would expect the deer to be scattered and hanging near what little water there is to be found.

Straydog...FYI there were several good size bulls pulled out of there this year. I think that burn helped to concentrate them. Most of the ones I heard of were on the ENE side of the drainage.

Good recommendation. That is a good spot for turkeys too.

Batman I pull the Applegate muzzleloader tag every other year and it is some tough hunting. No critters and I have never seen any monster bucks.
