They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
With all the rumors and dreams about Salmon opening back up on the Big C, I packed up my boat and headed West Forget those pesky Salmon, we got Halibut to raise from the depths. Check out these beauties....
OK, so those may not be real Halibut but they are pretty darn close. I think I found the hot spot for inside 40 fathoms
For real though, I had the pleasure of meeting and taking out Steve (aka Hawgs and Harleys) fishing today. We launched at first light with my wife and headed out for that long run out to the ranch. The ocean was great until we got about 12 miles out or so. Then it became choppy and we had to pound the rest of the way out. I didn't get any great action shots but I did get a pic back at the ramp. Steve got to keep a real nice one and throw another back. Erica's was nice to and as usual, mine was a little chickie Opted out of throwing it back to see if we could get a bigger one and decided to call it a day and head back to the barn. Back at the ramp before 11:00 am with sore arms and limits of white gold. Great fishing with you Steve, you are welcome aboard anytime .
Nice to see so many of my bretheren Seahawks out in the brine today

Re: They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
I don't poon Halibut cause that is how you can loose them A gaff job is all you need to do followed up by a good head pounding. I lived in Alaska for 5 years and gaffing 100 plus pound Halibut is no problem. Never lost one yet....
Boat is fine. I was sure proud of her today pounding through that sloppy water. Good three foot wind chop at five seconds apart and was still able to run 20 MPH to the grounds. Thank goodness there wasn't much of a swell. The only thing not working right is the guage for the trim/tilt.

Nice haul!
And good eats! Panko coating...that's my favorite way to deep fry 'em, too.
Congrats!

I use Panco and Pride of the West. Mix the two together and add some Johny Seafood Seasoning and you are good to go

Re: They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
Chris, Thanks a bunch for breaking the chop down for me . You must have been just ahead of me because Molly my son and I got back at 11:15. We ended up with two 40”s and one 43. I hauled up 5 different lines that morning. How do so many people lose all their line. Backing it in I suppose. Can you believe how flat it was in close. Talk about two different worlds. We dropped off our Hali’s and went back out for a limit of blacks and a couple of lings.

Great day on the water Tacklebuster. What time is dinner served?
Jennie, my 2.5 yr old grandson would say, " yummy, yummy in the tummy" if he could see these.
Someday I wanna fish out there for these.

Gus I think he may have cut the stomach out. Some people do that in hopes of keeping the worms out of their meat I think.

I can explain the rip, Chris said cut the gills to bleed it out. Not thinking of the photo I sliced it wide open.
Halibut rookie move!
Must have bled out ok, sure does taste good!

Re: They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
That was some nasty chop hugh Pete. The funny thing was I just said to my wife, "that must be another Seahawk ahead of us pounding through the chop going that fast." On a hunch I hollered for you on the radio and I was right Going 20 to 21 MPH through that stuff was awesome. There was a dude in a yellow ThunderJet that looked like he was getting beat to death. Once we got to within 8 miles of shore, the ocean smoothed out and we ran in at 30 to 32 MPH.
I actually liked the way Steve ripped those gills. Made for some fine eating meat with no blood I bet. You up for another trip on Friday or Saturday buddy

Re: They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
I hope I can make it. I’ve been fishing every weekend for a couple months now. I’ll try to get things taken care of so I can make it. Hope to see you there. It was funny watching the guy that was with you. I was thinking that this guy probably thinks we’re nuts. I know he got a pretty good view of the bottom of my boat a couple times

Re: They opened up Salmon.. Let's head out for Halibut
He got a real good view
He told me it was awesome watching the front view of a boat like mine going through that stuff. He could not have picked a better day to see what our boats are capabile of and how they ride in those conditions. I know that was the selling point for me last year when NorthriverRick took me out in his Seahawk. I told him at the end of the day, "your gonna cost me some money." Between the water spray and washing the butt slime off my floor, I had to hit my bilge pump once or twice. The cool part was blasting through those batches of jelly fish and watching them go airborne

Bendman, I was waiting to see how many times your prop left the water. Never did see your prop but I did see just about every inch of the rest of your boat out of the water a few times. Wild ride and a heck of a good time.
