Default the year of a life time

well i took my oldest boy (15) out for bucks last month and he got his second deer ,first buck with a great shot.boy dad was proud.he even gutted and drug it out of the canyon all by him self.i got mine 2 days latter.

then yesterday we got back from are elk hair tag hunt and never saw an elk.oh well.

but the capper for the year was still to come.

my 5 year old has been asking me to go hunting.he cant do the buck or the elk hunting but i told him i would take him on his first hunt with my doe/spike tag.he couldn't wait.well are first hunt was this morning on mt hood.i got him all oranged up, drove out past estacada to him saying "this is a long drive dad are we there yet"no i said almost.as we pull in a hunter leaving told us he saw 3 doe about 4 miles in.that got the boy exited.i new we would never see them but that really got him going.we drove up the road to go to my first hunting spot but on the way i saw a butt sticking out of the bushes on the side of the road.i told him there's one get ready.i pulled over and got him out to see the deer had left in too the brush.we walked over to were it had been and didn't see it so we walked in the brush about 5 steps.he said there it is daddy and pointed.sure enough there was a nice little spike 40 yards off in the brush.i told him to plug his ears and watch the deer as i shot.all i could see was head, neck and above the front shoulder and i made the shot.((BOOM))) the boy and the deer jump and the deer runs off in to some think brush.i started kicking my self because as we were leaving the house i knocked my riffle over and it landed straight on the scope in the dinning room.i was going to leave it home and take my oldest boys .270 but i thought im sure he bumped that one more than mine in the last month so i took mine.now i stand in the woods with my boy to a deer running off as i hope for a hit sense it was not the a deer dropping hit i had planed.i walked my boy over to were the deer was standing when i made the shot and told him we were looking for blood.then right there on that fern i saw blood."see" i said "there's some ,lets find some more"..i let him track the blood for about 15 feet in to the brush with the "yep that's some more good job lets keep going.keep looking" as i look up i can see the deer down 10 feet away.keep following the blood i said"...."there it is" i said, not thinking this poor boy cant ever see over the brush so i hold him up to see "we got it dad "he said."yep way to go
( hunting buddy).nice tracking" i said to him.a small drag and we were out at the truck.i put it in the back to go look for a better place to gut it.we drove down the road to a nice clear spot and i asked him if he wanted to stay in the truck or come watch.
"i want to come "he said.well that little ( man ) sat there and watched me clean that deer out and even wanted to help."no" i said you need to stay clean you have to go to school after lunch.
( afternoon kindergarder) well in the ten minuets i was gutting it all i would here is "we got a deer, where is the heart?what is that?what is that?cool we got a deer". well in the truck we all go, racing off to school. stoping at a restroom to wash up.we make it to school 5 minuets early and i watch as he tells his teacher the hole story.then he comes over to me and said "thanks hunting buddy"
and gives me a big long hug.i had a tear rolling down my cheek right there in class."your welcome hunting buddy
thank you" i said.then i left him at school to learn about the rest of life on this big blue planet.

what a great start of many great years to come.and a day i hope we will never forget

i hope you all have as great as year as i have had so far..

Great story Wiz. I know he'll remember that hunt for a long time. And I'm sure you two will have many more. I'm headed out this Thursday for our elk hunt. Unfortunately my son is in college and can't come with us this year. We'll miss not having him around. May be next time.

Very similar to my sons first hunt with me 24 years ago. Only we both were playing 'hookey'... I bagged a 4x3 mulie and he helped me drag it down the snowy slope to the truck and dress it out... This was on the Chewak R. in WA..... Today he is a wildlife biologist in ND... I'm sure that hunt set his course in life..... He spends much time in ND talking to elementary school classes and 4H groups...... and has started many youngsters hunting with bows. He's also been published in some bow hunting mags....... maybe all due to a great father-son hunting trip.

Madwizard, you've got it all going right!

I got a pic of my four year old coming off the breaks into a canyon, riding the 4 wheeler with his uncle. I snapped it as they stopped and my 3X4 mulie came into view. The look in his eyes is undescribable! I too had a tear or two flowing as he jumped off and started runnig. He wanted to know everything! Exactly how it happened and where did I see it and how far was it, etc, etc. I didn't know how he would do with the blood, but after picking through the gut pile with a stick, he proceeded to sink his finger right into the bullet hole. He then proudly rode all the way back to camp with his finger extended, ensuring that the blood would still be there, so he could prove that he helped.

Passing it on is the most rewarding experience of my life!

We went up as a family, and three generations enjoyed the experience!
