Trask doe tag
Okay, no negative comments please about doe hunting, I just want to know IF ANY OTHER DOE HUNTERS have had any success in the Trask unit. I haven't been out at all due to buck in Ukiah (got a forkinhorn) and no elk in Beulah (wah!!). I'm not even asking where to go, I have the usual spots. Just want to know what it's been like out there.
Thanks,
Biederboat

Re: Trask doe tag
First and foremost, there is NOTHING wrong with shooting a doe. With that said, we have seen does 5 out of our last six trips out. We have been seing most of them in the middle of the day. I hunt the trask unit every year and have seen more does this year than the last three. Good luck.....

Re: Trask doe tag
Tacklebuster,
Thanks, I'm looking forward to going. I agree, there's nothing wrong with doe hunting and I don't even mind arguing that point it's just that I didn't want to start a "war" before my questioned got answered.
Thanks again,
Mark

Re: Trask doe tag
I miss my Trask doe tag! I had it last year and filled it pretty easily. I am definately a meat hunter and Ill take a doe anytime I can get the tag.
Good luck with your hunt and bag some great eats!

Re: Trask doe tag
Well, I've got a Trask doe tag also. I've been out twice (to much fishing) and not seen a thing, hunting on Stimson land west of Hagg lake. Very good area, I just havn't been able to find any deer. A doe tag is not that easy to fill...or I'm just a crappy hunter!

Re: Trask doe tag
The rain would definitely help, especially if it does it all night. If you're in a good area, you'll find them anywhere late in the season (clearcuts, forest, etc.). Higher up on Hwy 6 is a lot of tall timber, I would look for an area with a lot of clear cuts. Try Stimpson or out of the Carlton area.

Re: Trask doe tag
I wish I could buy a clue on this one. I am relatively new to hunting and am learning as I go. My wife and I both have trask doe tags. The only deer we have seen are in the photos on the wall of the 76 station out Hwy 6. :depressed: Sooner or later we gotta bump into one.
Anyone willing to give some tips to a couple of responsible, respectful, safe new hunters? (One has a permenent disability permit).

Re: Trask doe tag
Pdxkevin,
What part of the Trask are you guys hunting? There are a couple of ways that we usually hunt that will put a baldy in the freezer but this is a sure fire way. Find yourself a nice draw away from the roads. I like a draw that has big ferns along the sides and bottom. Position yourself up top and wait them out. If you see deer trails and sign along and in the draw, your in.
The second way is to wait until we get a rainy/drizzly day. Once you get the cover noise of water falling in the trees, walk through the woods very slowly. I have come across deer that are bedded down in the ferns this way a bunch.
The third way is to find a good high spot that overlooks a 3 to 5 year old clear cut. Have a shooter up high and have another person drive through the cut. A lot of times deer will bed down in the older clear cuts that provide cover. I have put quite a few people on does that way. Good luck and post some results.

Re: Trask doe tag
Another good way to get into deer is just after a decent rain (if it ever gets here) walk down a road thats closed to motor vehicals. The deer like to be out in the open after the rain stops but the trees are still dripping. For the permit holder I would find a nice clear cut close to a road and just wait her out. Early morning and late evening is best but alot of deer are taken in the middle of the day.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">We tried the Stimpson sign-in land just off Hwy 6 and then from the Prison Camp down to Jordon Rd all south of Hwy 6. We found fresh scat, rubs and what I believe to be fresh tracks.
Thanks for the tips. We will definately try them.

Re: Trask doe tag
Tacklebuster,
I was thinking of the Stimpson land out of Hagg Lake area, it's lower and a lot of clear cuts. I'm not really familar with the upper part.

Re: Trask doe tag
I've gotten two short afternoon outings over the Trask doe season and all I've run into were bucks, one each trip. I've been hunting the Stimpson Gales Creek area off of 6. I like the area for a quick afternoon (open on weekends) hunt as it is part of the Trask road closure which means lots of area to walk without tons of people. Unfortunatly, Last year I had a buck tag and the only buck I saw was while the season was closed for Elk. This year, I don't have a buck tag and I have only seen those couple bucks.
The injustice of it all!

Re: Trask doe tag
Just has to be "Murphy's Law!" I haven't been able to buy a glance at a buck...But I have seen some pretty big does this season. Saw a very large group on Baseline Rd. in the lower part of Stimson's....Now I'm just trying to find that buck that is with em.
