Pistols and Archery
At first I was thinking, " Why would I want to do that ? "
Now I am considering it. Why ?
Because I am hunting private property and we have had some problems. Also: People shoot along the road where I hunt. I think some of these Bozo's actually shoot into the brush at a distance. I 'd like to let them know someone is down there.
So do you Pack a gun and what do you use ?
I hate the idea because it's just more wieght to carry.
Saw a Taurus Titanium .357 I liked. It was very light weight.

Nope, don't have a need for packing a sidearm while bowhunting.

Re: Pistols and Archery
Lot's of opinions out there on this one, but I do carry while I'm bowhunting.
In order of risk to me while hunting:
1. People
2. Cougar
3. Bear
More than anything the "garden" I may run into while hunting scares me the most, followed closely by a cougar.
Glock 23 for me. Honest to God, hope I never have to use it.

Re: Pistols and Archery
I hunt over east, in the land of Mtn. Lions, bears, wily coyotes, angry squirrels, and rustling chipmunks.
In the 7 years I've hunted in that area, I've never seen another hunter in the woods. Nobody is shooting firearms around me, and with the exception of possibly falling in dark timber, twisting an ankle, or falling in a canyon with nobody around, I really don't have anything to be afraid of.
Except the bogeyman.
However I'm reminded of the old saying.
"Better to have and not need than to need and not have."

Re: Pistols and Archery
I have a weapons permit and would not even consider carrying a gun. What for? I am ok with a pistole but there is no way I can hit a charging cougar. My best bet is to be aware. I don't want the weight, I walk a lot and cover a lot of ground so the weight is one less thing to carry it leaves more room to carry more arrows .
I also go to great lenghts to hunt legaly and away from people and roads so I feel no need to protect my self.
Personaly I am concerned about bowhunters carrying guns I think it is going to create a oppertunity for some to think aw nobody is around I will use my pistole and stuff a arrow in there.
So no I don't carry a gun. But then you never know what I am carrying in pack so don't mess with me

Re: Pistols and Archery
I archery hunt in the scappoose unit, not so much the cougars or bears, but the meth heads out their. Columbia county has a big problem of these meth sites out in the woods. Another reason why I carry a pistol with me was from a post that I read on Ifish about a guy who was bank fishing I think is Washington and was followed down to the river bank by 3 guys without poles and looked like they had an idea to mug him. Bottom line, it's the people not the animals that I worry about. I plan on getting my concealed permit next month before archery season. It's too bad it's come to this.

Re: Pistols and Archery
Hey Pan Fry we hunt out that way too but again you are armed with bow I don't think they will bother you. The meth stuff is getting worse it used to be the pot. Ah well these guys I can promise will not hike up to our spot they are too lazy.

Re: Pistols and Archery
I hunt private land too, and I occasionally have to run off trespassers. I like having the gun available when I have to do that. Some of them are pretty shady characters.
I also know a guy who had a hair-raising encounter with a bear a couple of years ago while bowhunting up the North Umpqua. He doesn't go out without his pistol anymore. The vast majority of bears and cougars will leave you alone, but it only takes that one to ruin your day.

Re: Pistols and Archery
I have a CWP but never pack outside of the woods. As for packing when I am hunting, I do sometimes, but sometimes I don't because of the weight issue, like 8 days into a 10 day hunt . I have been thinking about carrying a pellet pistol, squirrels really get annoying sometimes and it may prove handy to herd some cows off every now and then.

Re: Pistols and Archery
Ok Brian I will buy the pellet gun for squirles that makes sense . They can dry me nuts but Brian, those cows make wonderful cow pies that smell so fresh and they make great cover scent when you step in them. You don't have to be quite when hunting with a herd of cows feeding along the ridge.

Me too, little buggers. Just when I settle into a great stand, out comes the squirrel. Broadhead are too expensive to waste on squirrels. I have a .22 with a built in suppressor and a laser grip. It's a bit over the top but what the hey.
Pfffft

Re: Pistols and Archery
Been shot at by a dude in the woods before at super close range.....wished I would have had my pistol. Hate to carry it cause is so firggin' heavy. Catch 22 if you ask me.
It all comes down to situation....certain places, certain times, definately if I'm spending the night in the woods!!

Re: Pistols and Archery
Watch the movie Deliverance! Burt Renoylds character didnt feel the need for a hand gun to protect himself. Now that being said Its your right to carry. You dont have to make excuses. Carry if you want or dont. no choise is wrong

Re: Pistols and Archery
Ever been on stand only to have a friggin squirrel start scolding you and thereby warning everything within 500 yards that you are sitting there in your camo? Many times I have sat there contemplating whether the satisfaction I receive from sticking the little rodent to a tree would be worth the price of an arrow.
Can you say suppressed .22?
I think you can

Re: Pistols and Archery
I know the feeling those little buggers can get under your skin Some of my sickest thoughts come from thinking about what I could do to those little buggers.

Re: Pistols and Archery
THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS CARRY NOW. This past year I went down to Californias Trinity Alps blacktail hunting with my girlfriend. My bow broke and so we were packing out when we got caught between a big sow blackie and her cub. She was growling and popping her jaw, while her cub was whining directly behind us. I was thinking charge. With the cub behind us and a near cliff below us we were kind of stuck. My girlfriend was carrying my 9mm since she wasn't hunting. I took it from her and fired off two shots over the bears head. It turned and ran off down the trail. She was really scared when we had to continue on down the trail where it had just run.
Right now I carry a full size taurus 9mm because that is what I have. I would like a lighter gun like an airlight .357
